It should, in theory, be much harder to make actual constitutional changes but will really be the ultimate test of the US constitution, which has long been held up as almost gospel... ... ... especially by Republicans.

And if it fails that test then the entire constitution might as well be torn up and thrown in the nearest bin, not one word of it will be worth a single cent. Certainly interesting times, scary as they are... a huge part of what's allowing things to go as they are is that the opposing side has one hand tied behind their back playing by the established letter of law and government in the US... if it all goes out the window all bets are off .

SCOTUS is meant to read the Constitution and "only" go by what is written. They're not supposed to find loopholes or make up new interpretations to fit any intention just because "they can see it both ways" or insert moral view.

I have no love for either party. I think both have the appetite to alter the system to grab power in a big way. And there's certainly some interest by different members of SCOTUS in doing things out of the norm. It's a matter of who wants to step up to hit the activation button on the dangerous scary puzzle and see how the American public reacts. Our politics is so full of inflated egos in so many ways, it's only a matter of time.

Anyway, it seems we are not getting term limits for Congressional members. I think of all guard rails, we need that more to make room a political system that adapts faster to changing cultural norms... modern thinking and technology requires that now.

Starmer, trade talks with the US are at an advanced stage

also Starmer, it is likely the UK will be hit by tarriffs, so much for the special relationship eh?

Our only hope is that Charlie won't be able to host Donnie again due to health issues..

there are all sorts of reasons for trump planting this seed. He wants to be the most powerful and richest man in the world, so he doesn't want to give up his position of power. The other side is that he very quickly becomes a lame duck president unless he floats the possibility of another term.

He is old, who knows if it will become an issue or not, but if he is still alive, i'm sure he will remain president, one way or another

But thus far it's not working that way... it's becoming a messy trade war... and there's every chance that the other countries involved will cluster up and leave the US out in the cold. They think that can't happen because of the value of the US economy and the USD being the currency of choice -- but it doesn't have to be, and if they think the US economy can't decline to 2nd or even 3rd place (behind China and EU+UK), they are simply wrong. I say "wrong"... they're not daft, they know fine well it can. What they're doing is bluffing/gambling at everyone else's expense.

Markets have absolutely tanked, lol. There's very little argument to support the idea that they have any idea what they're doing at this point. Literally no one benefits from this. I do enjoy that British Gammonry will be shooting and celebrating in complete ignorance to the fact that their pension pots are plummeting to the floor .

[edit] That said I suppose most probably won't be in private pots, just waiting to scrub around on their state pension blaming immigrants for it not being enough to live on.

I have a friend at Standard Life, he'll only talk about it in very vague terms but I suppose they probably have rules around that sort of thing. He did say, "Well. The money's always somewhere". Cryptic...

Gone up since when, though? Year-on-year lots of things are still up (way up) but in the last month the boards are all red, it's dire. Ultimately for pensions it might matter or it might not - if you still have 10+ years until retirement all that matters is annual %age gain... if you're one or two years off retirement, a 10%+ market crash could cost tens of thousands or even into 6-figures depending on the size of the pension.

I get a yearly statement in January, and I logged in on Friday to see if had gone down, logged in again today and both times it has risen.

I don't know if it works different there, but when I worked with a company that offered 401K, I could change ratio and selection of stocks in the 401K every so often. I always picked safe bets but with lesser gains and so that impacts whether some things even touch the acct or not during market volatility. If people are picking high value, but more sensitive stocks and putting all their eggs in those options, then I can see that being disastrous...

The interesting thing is that if america loses it's position as the key world currency, it won't have the same demand for its currency. This has a huge knock on effect because if countries dont invest in the USD, then america will no longer be able to run its economy with a budget deficit. That will mean they have to pay back trillions

I can easily see a new world order coming along that just excludes America. Lets see how they like that

The tinfoil hat in me might of course suggest that, if that was to happen, it was the intent of Trump/Musk and co all along. It feels too intentional.

Of course the whole thing could still be one massive bull rush scam, tanking the economy, investing heavily via proxies and then making changes/announcements designed to trigger a massive rebound. For anyone who knew such was coming... they could easily double (or more) their wealth. Yet another massive transfer of global funds upwards.
