Colin Farrell has spoken out against homophobic bullying.

The actor, who has previously revealed that his brother is gay, participated in Irish organisation Belong To's week-long campaign to end such oppression, reports Perez Hilton.

Farrell said: "I can't remember much about the years of physical and emotional abuse my brother Eamon suffered. I was very small. The thing I do remember though, quite literally, is blood on his school shirt when he came home in the afternoon. The beatings and taunting were very frequent for my him and a constant part of his school years.

"People are often afraid of difference. They feel that anything that causes fear, should be turned away from. My brother represented fear for so many people, but caused joy in my life. From a very young age he made me laugh with his intelligence and wit, made me aspire to his strength and goodness. He was to be embraced.

"To many of the students of his school however he was to be feared. He was to be turned away from. I didn't understand it then, and I still don't now."

Something seriously should be dont about it. the amount of stick my friend gets for being gay is awful. However, its gotten slightly better since he came out. Thing is though, people (mainly boys) still try and sit as far away from his as they can on a table.

omfg I know. They need to grow the ***** up. It makes me so angry when he tells me about it. One of my friends (not really friend but a nice girl) stuck up for him, because this boy said to himself that my friend was too busy sucking cock to finish the coursework. This girl then was like was there really any need and what has that got to do anything with coursework and he didnt know what to say.
It just shows they only do it when they think they wont get caught, or looked down on for it

It just shows they only do it when they think they wont get caught, or looked down on for it

That was really nice of that girl, there was this lovely girl I knew who my best friends didn't like very much and couldn't understand why I liked her so much, but it was because she was one of the few people who stuck up for me [or other people if they needed it] in situations like that. It's people like them that make me try and always help someone in a situation like that if I can even it potentially risks getting abuse myself.

yeah people like that are great. I wish more people were like that. Im not even like that. I know if i stuck up for him it would make it worse for both of us really. It's so crap when you hear people taking the piss near him. I wish I could say so much to them but you just cant!

Well I'm sure your friend knows you're there for him if he needs you. Very often it's easier for people from the outside looking in to say something because they don't have much to loose.

I am so lucky that I go to a school where about 80% of people are gay or bisexual.

yeah you are. My friend is the only person to have actually come out. I know there is others cause you can just tell they are.

Teens these days seem to come to terms with sexuality a lot quicker than say ten years ago. I think for a lot of people, myself included, coming out was essential because it made everything feel more real, you know? Like that you really ARE acceptant of it and it really is a part of your life.

Yeah like so your not lieing about one of the biggest factors of your life. I can't wait for there to be a time where people just accept it. People accept it now, but they still are assholes about it all. I think most of it is just an act to look cool anyway. How its cool, I have no idea.

I get so sad when I read stories like this. I've never been bullied myself for being gay, and that's probably because most of my friends are straight guys. Homosexuality is not a disease, homophobia is.
