Seems to work the other way around, strangely enough. Those who are already quite comfortably well off are the most in favour of selfish policies. Presumably to preserve that comfort.

That depends. There's nothing wrong with wanting a comfortable future for yourself and your family, but some people's definition of "comfort" extends more towards "excess", which isn't a problem in itself either, except when that excess comes at the expense of others.
