¯\_(ツ)_/¯

As great as Hawking (I assume you mean Stephen) was, he was much less of a man who provided service to his country than Turing so it makes sense from a "patriotic hero" standpoint.
I've just seen that the person chosen for the £20 note is JMW Turner. Interesting... bit leftfield, though.

It's about time Turing got some recognition. What he was put through because of his sexuality, after what he did for this country during the war was truly reprehensible. And also, let's put a statue of him on the fourth plinth in Trafalgar Square, lose the endless rotation of modern art and put a real hero on it.

Perfect choice.
He was a true hero, and the way he was treated was disgusting. |

Turing is a hero whose treatment at the hands of our country is a dark stain upon our history. If it weren't for Alan Turing, the world we live in could be very different and we drove him to suicide after he served his country because of who he loved.
I don't think anything will ever undo the damage what was done but this is a nice tribute, it's just a shame he never got the chance to see his redemption come to fruition. |

Gays weren't allowed to serve openly until 2000. This was after a couple of ex-forces gay people - a man and a woman - were thrown out for being gay and Stonewall took up their case. Only then really, did things start to change. So gay people wouldn't have been invited to any official commemorations or parades in the 80s anyway.
