Remember when everyone used to pop down to PC World to pay £800 for a PC they could have cobbled together for £400? They must have been raking it in in the late 90's/early 00's...

Crazy days !!

I recall buying our first PC from a computer shop who built it to my specifications ...

It must be nearly 30 years ago .. cost just over £2,000 !!

Buying ore-built still costs more than building your own obviously but it’s a much more realistic service charge these days, like £100-£150 more than the cost of the parts. Not DOUBLE. It was insane.

(Except “Alienware” who still seem to be charging £1500 for computers you could build for under £1000)

Window shopping at these stores was always a fun trip for me.

I found this out when I bought a new PC fairly recently. You don't save much by building yourself - certainly not enough to make it worth my time.

Also... I thought ore-built was some new phrase I'd never heard of at first.

It depends really on if you upgrade regularly - you don't save much on the cost of the components that are included in a new build, but there are some components you don't have to upgrade every time, e.g. Power Supply Unit, SSD's, hard drives, the case itself... so if I was to do a "full upgrade" it would usually just be motherboard, processor, RAM and graphics card. New SSD tech as and when it's released. Generally I "stagger" my purchases too, with a purchase every 18 months or so, which means motherboard/CPU/RAM once every 3 years and graphics card once every 3 years.

Except you can't buy graphics cards these days so I've more or less given up for the time being .

i built my own pc's years ago, and upgraded them myself regularly too. Over the last 10 years, the need to upgrade frequently just hasn't been there and the configure your pc build and let them build it is very competitively priced and they do a great neat build, which is something i never managed in all my builds
