Default 1 Hell of a Battle

Quote:
1 HELL OF A BATTLE
ECORD bosses face a multi-million pound fight to get last night’s X Factor winner to the top of the charts.

A campaign led by Radio 1 DJs could prevent the victor’s single When You Believe getting to No.1 on Sunday.

Now worried executives are ready to spend more than ever on marketing and advertising the song so it follows the chart-topping releases of Steve Brookstein, Shayne Ward and Leona Lewis.

With downloads now included in sales, classics like The Pogues’ Fairytale Of New York, featuring Kirsty MacColl, and Mariah Carey’s All I Want For Christmas Is You could leave the X Factor team crying into their mince pies.

Snub

The campaign to sabotage the winner’s chances started on Radio 1 but has been picked up by websites MySpace and Facebook.

The single, a cover of the Mariah Carey and Whitney Houston hit, is facing huge opposition led by DJs including Scott Mills and Edith Bowman, who urged their listeners to snub the track in favour of We’re All Going To Die by
former Arab Strap lead singer Malcolm Middleton.

And according to HMV spokesman Gennaro Castaldo it would not be a big surprise if The Pogues’ classic snatched the top spot.

He said: “It represents the spirit of Christmas more than any other song. If the campaign to get it to the top of the charts builds up over the next week, it could beat the X Factor song.”

Last night DJ Colin Murray said: “If people think it would be healthy to break the predictable X Factor pop stronghold on the Christmas No.1 then download a Christmas single.”

But we can reveal show chiefs are fighting back.

Although the single will not hit the shops until Wednesday, the download was made available to buy at midnight last night.

X Factor bosses were hoping Rhydian Roberts, 24, would take the title as they reckon he could be the biggest moneyspinner.

By last night 300,000 versions of Rhydian’s single had already been made, while just 100,000 of Leon Jackson’s and 50,000 of Same Difference’s efforts were ready to be shipped to stores.

Despite the tough competition, the X Factor single still remains favourite to top the charts, aided by an estimated 12million viewers who watched Rhydian battle it out with Leon and Same Difference. But X Factor chiefs are ready to splash out to give the single a massive push this week in a bid to see off the competition.

Speaking last night before belting out spine-tingling versions of O Holy Night, Somewhere and You Raise Me Up alongside Katherine Jenkins, Rhydian said: “My whole X Factor experience has been amazing.

“When I watch the earlier clips I cringe because they are really embarrassing.

“I do come across as a bit of a tosser – and I admit that.

“I think I was the villain of the show and initially that was quite hard to swallow.

“But I think, looking back, that has done me a favour because people have taken an interest in me and I felt determined to turn it around.”

Faith

Over the course of the series Rhydian was called, “revolting”, “disgusting”, “pompous”, “barking mad” and a “drama queen” by the judges.

And he admitted: “Some of the early comments from Sharon in particular were hard to deal with.

“But you just have to get on with it. I have a deep faith in God and wanted to concentrate on the positives rather than the negatives.”

And speaking of his mentor Dannii Minogue, he added: “Dannii has been absolutely fantastic. We got off to a bit of a dodgy start because she didn’t really like me at first.

“But ever since I started to work with her she has been the best possible mentor.

“She has been so supportive and is also incredibly sexy – which is a bonus.”

So Leon might not get to Number 1 after all.

It would be great if Fairytale of New York got the Xmas No. 1, as Shane McGowan will be celebrating his 50th birthday on christmas day and it will mark 20 years since the song's original release. But i doubt it will, unfortunately Leon will more than likely reach the top spot.

Yeah because it didnt reach No. 1 in the first place so it would be nice to see it get it 20 years on, but at the same time I would like to see Leon get it too.

I really like that Fairytale of New York song, plus it is more of a Chirstmas song then Leon's.
