E4's Brooker thriller is set in Big Brother house

Charlie Brooker's E4 zombie thriller Dead Set will be set in the Big Brother house.

The production team on the five-part thriller built a set based on the reality show's house and the drama uses many elements of the format.

With the waking dead attacking the living, the Big Brother house becomes one of the few remaining safe houses in the country - but the contestants are unaware of the horror outside.

The five-part series is E4's most expensive drama to date. It will open with a 60-minute episode followed by four 30-minute editions.

It was commissioned by head of E4 Angela Jain and comedy commissioning editor Shane Allen. Brooker and Annabel Jones will executive produce for Zeppotron, with Chrissy Skinns as producer and Secret Diary of a Call Girl's Yann Demange as director.

This Channel 4 press release from April says "Late 2008":

E4 has commissioned writer Charlie Brooker to write its first horror series Dead Set (working title). The six- part thriller (6 x 30 mins) will be produced by Zeppotron (an Endemol Company) and will be both E4’s and Zeppotron’s first departure into the horror genre.

This major new commission for E4 is to broadcast on the digital channel in late 2008. The series has been commissioned by Head of E4 Angela Jain and Commissioning Editor, Shane Allen. The Executive Producers of Dead Set are Charlie Brooker and Zeppotron Managing Director Annabel Jones. The producer is Chrissy Skinns and the Director is Yann Demange, whose recent credits include Secret Diary of a Call Girl. Further details about cast will be announced nearer to transmission.

Charlie Brooker is well known for his weekly columns in The Guardian and his BBC Four series Charlie Brooker’s Screen Wipe. Charlie co-wrote the C4 comedy series Nathan Barley with Chris Morris and was the creator of the hugely successful website TV Go Home.

Angela Jain, Head of E4, said: “It's enormously exciting that Charlie Brooker has penned this thriller for E4. He is an exceptional writer and this promises to be something special and unusual for E4.”

Charlie Brooker said: “Dead Set is very different to anything I’ve done before, and I hope the end result will surprise, entertain and appal people in equal measure.”

E4 has commissioned a new horror drama series set in a fictional Big Brother house.

The new five-part thriller, Dead Set, is written by Charlie Brooker and will be the centre-piece of E4’s autumn 2008 schedule.

The drama is set in a Britain where the walking dead are attacking the living. It stars Jaime Winstone (Donkey Punch, Goldplated) as a production runner working on a fictional series of Big Brother who tries to fend off the walking dead alongside the remaining housemates, her producer boss Patrick (Andy Nyman, Severance) and boyfriend Riq (Riz Ahmed, Britz).

Dead Set also features a range of cameo guest appearances including Davina McCall and several former Big Brother housemates.

In Dead Set the Big Brother house suddenly becomes one of the few remaining safe places in the country, with the contestants blissfully unaware of the horrific events unfolding outside. Until an eviction night where all hell breaks loose…

Over the ensuing days, in a cruel echo of the game show that they thought they were entering, the contestants fall victim, one by one, to the hungry masses outside. Staying alive requires teamwork – which is tricky when you’re a group specifically selected by TV producers to wind each other up.
