Default Are we motivated by sex?

Freud came up with a few theories that we are all motivated by sex and came up with some things like the oedipus complex (where a little boy is supposed to want to have sex with his mum) and the electra complex which is the same but the other way girl and her dad.

Loads of people through the years have criticised him for it and saying its a load of rubbish and saying how theres no such thing when theres children and sex just makes up a part of our life, but is it a load of rubbish?

I don't think things like the oedipus complex is true, but I think he has a point about the rest of the things. After reading a load of posts on here lately and even just thinking about general conversation in real life, a lot have been about sex, the funniest jokes are always about sex and in some ways even the most innocent of things can suddenly be about sex (e.g. a pepper mill )

So, are we motivated by it and its what we live for or is it just a part of our lives?

I think his theories are as well, I mean who honestly knows about stuff like that at an early age and even cares? But I think it has a point about the motivated by sex thing, maybe not as much as he claims but I wouldn't exactly say it was completely wrong

I dont think children want to have sex with the parent - but i do believe you will want to be with someone who is like your mum or dad. Like my dad always said to me i would fall in love with the smell and taste of beer cos if i taste it from someones lips it will remind me of him and that will sooth me. And he said that I will be with someone who has the same emotions as my dad. and every guy i have been with in a relationship has been like my dad and i want them all to impress my dad.

I am easily influenced to things by sex. I think sex is a very important thing in life. The other day i was having a msn convo with someone on tibb (wont say who) but they were asking what it was like and asking about myths etc they had heard and needed that cleared up. Its on peoples minds most of the time I think.

And I would say that its the best thing ever.

Freud went a bit batty, but his research into the subconscious dominates Psychology. Without him, I'm sure we wouldn't understand half the things we do now.

In terms of the incestuous relations, though... he's crazzzzzzzzed.

And survival of the fittest ethos to do with sex was developed by the Evolutionary Psychs rather than Freud, he only dabbled in it slightly.

Personally I'm with the neuropsychologists. Sex gives us pleasure, which increases serotonin, which makes us want to do it more & more.... & more.

Edit: Omg. I just managed to make sex sound boring.

Hahah, I realised when I read back.

This time I will answer without the Psychology.

Yes I think we're motivated by sex, because obviously it's fun and enjoyable, and so we'd do it more and crave it.

And he was on about unconscious motivations. Although his ideas are a bit extreme their is evidence to suggest that young children have a kind of romantic attachment to the parent of the opposite sex, obviousley they dont have sexual ideas at that age, this gradually goes when they form relationships with others as they get older.

Did I say all of his ideas? No. I meant his ideas surrounding this topic. If I thought he was a load of crap, would I have opened the argument by saying some of his theories?
