There are tree's and buildings all over Alton Towers, which is a wide area not populated by people late at night.

If a fire broke out in a village late at night/early morning, someone would eventually know about it and it'd be stopped before it became too bad.

Whereas if a fire started at a closed theme park with nobody in it, people wouldn't notice as most of them would be in bed...when they do finally notice, it'd be when quite a lot of Alton Towers is already on fire.

Lucky it happened when it did to be honest, would obviously rather it never happened in the first place.
I think places like Alton Towers have round the clock security even out of season. Plus they probably have numerous fire alarms scattered across the park.
