Border security isn't hatred though. It's been a huge issue for most voters here for more than a few presidencies and every president has promised major immigration reform and yet nada... I didn't understand for a while why the wall was such a big deal, but immigration is higher up on the bucket list for most voters than even I realized (and I live in Texas so we care a lot about it obvs)... anyway, but why
the wall?... well, because he made such a big deal about it and was willing to make such colorful comments... oh this guy is actually serious about immigration.
Past presidencies have been for open borders (more or less) regardless of what they say in writing/policy... which makes sense, when both parties were hanging by a thread and in desperate need for remodel... a significant part of our population is Hispanic and in not too long, that will be a huge demographic in the US... so yeah, if they're concerned about long-term survival and getting the youth vote, it's good to start there... but after Trump presidency, we learned even Hispanics, particularly legal migrants, they are more than happy to support stricter immigration reform... in fact, they have the same concerns... so I don't think immigration is a racial issue for the core voter... though what Trump said was pretty horrible, particularly the pandering to border states about how all these illegal immigrants are rapists, etc, and was one of the top reasons I did not vote for him...
But to my original point, I don't think the wall itself is racist (in theory)... it is certainly symbolically to the Mexican people whose politicians have ratcheted up the rhetoric against the US which has really changed their elections a bit...
