Have them as well as the old ones imo. Trouble is, an adult reading it could acknowledge a certain element being a product of its time, and not reflective of modern society. A kid tho.. probably couldn't

its adults who read these stories to children, by the time they can read for themseves they have moved on from fairy tales

I think this whole debate is fairly ridiculous.

If you don't like the traditional fairy tales, write new ones. We shouldn't rewrite stories that aren't ours to rewrite just because they aren't modern enough nor should we take life lessons from anything other than the morale of the stories themselves.

These stories as they are can open up important topics to kids that might not come up in a way they would understand if we rewrite the old stories. Again, people who don't like the old stories need to come up with their own instead of expecting what are harmless traditional stories to change for their own benefit.

Yeah I don't like the idea of traditional classic fairytales being butchered to fit someone's "modern life" , even the movie In To The Woods annoyed me the way they made Prince charming cheat on Cinderella. The movie wasn't that good either.

I mean, people can rewrite it if they want. The main question for me is not whether we should rewrite, but should we black out the old versions, i.e. revisionist... then my answer would be no.

Any story though, anything can be retold/rewritten. That's pretty common across all media and has been particularl true with fairytales. I don't think even Disney is 100% faithful to borrowed stories, and Hollywood almost certainly isn't

Once Upon a Time is a modern version in some sense of classical storytelling... the reason to be attached to older versions of fairytales is that they are an example of a particular style of story-telling, with a penchant for sensibility and moral lessons centered of childhood... and it's this "art form" that should be preserved, as it is proven to be extremely accessible.

I think modern media lacks this versability, as more and more it's about aesthetics (like what color the princess is and how she dresses, etc) and popular culture (omg, she listens to rock!). So it's important to study the older way of doing things so they can see how these techniques can be used in the development of engaging/memorable storylines that stand the test of time. Classical fairytales achieve an artform that is actually very difficult to master.

Found my uni project notes so thought some might find these interesting. Some dark origins of Fairytales:

Sleeping Beauty: King finds her asleep, rapes her and she has a child (still asleep) who sucks the thorn out of her finger that's keeping her asleep. Then, King kills his wife to be with SB.

The Little Mermaid: "Ariel" is in agony once she gets her legs as punishment for leaving her life "under the sea" and if her Prince married someone else she'd die and turn into sea foam. So her sister's make a deal with "Ursula" by trading their hair for a dagger. "Ariel" must kill him and have his blood drip on her feet to return to being a mermaid...

Cinderella: One of the "ugly sisters" cuts off her toes so that the glass [gold] slipper fits whilst the other cuts off her heel. Doves then peck their eyes out at Cinders' wedding.

Snow White: Similar to "SW & the Huntsman", the Wicked Queen orders the HM to take her into the woods and kill her but he must bring back her organs for her to eat. Later at SW's wedding to the Prince, Queen, ordered to, dances herself to death wearing red-hot iron shoes...

Mulan: Commits suicide.

The Fox & the Hound: The Fox is the villain of the story and leads a dog to it's death (hit by a train). Dog's owner gets another (Hound) and trains it to hunt the Fox, Fox dies.

Little Red Riding Hood: Eats her Grandmother's body and drinks her blood (not knowing, tricked by Wolf).
