Default Should subtracting karma be allowed?

Listen, I'm not complaining about my karma beacause I have done alot of stupid things in the past. Should karma be subtractable? It can become personal. It can go so far you just take it away for no reason. In a way it is like bullying, if you do it for the sheer fact that you don't like someone or you don't like their opinions.

If you don't like karma, there's an option to turn it off when you're editing your profile in the Member CP

As already said, the option to turn karma off counter balances any issues you might have with it...

And it is quite clear that those with good karma's wouldn't complain and those without do, which would lead us all to believe that it's just a case of people being upset that they/their posts are disliked.

I don't think "bullying" or any karma abuse honestly goes on throughout the forum...people are rewarded karma for contributing, and subtracted karma for either 1. Causing trouble or 2. Causing offense.

The worst case scenario is usually someone subtracting from your karma because you've had an arguement, but if you're having less arguments/causing trouble than you are posting good posts, it should never become a negative number.

I see far too many people posting a couple of positive words/half a sentence, then always writing a paragraph of negative words when they feel like it...which is often the problem im thinking.

People can't just go around posting "I agree, yeaaaa that's right, trueeee, woooo" etc etc and expect + Karma.

If people honestly think you've put the effort in, they'll perhaps notice it.

You sum up the reason why karma is bad and a wast of time. People as you have observed will abuse such a function.

Anything that may deter you from being frank and honest in your point of views in case you suffer revenge from someone who takes a dislike to you or your viewpoints is bad. Karma is a subtle form of censorship. Be yourself speak what you believe and if other cannot cope with that and use Karma for revenge then they have the problem not you.

Best thing to do is turn the useless thing off........

I think the fact that you can turn it off if you dont like it is great. I have to say though it is only a number and I couldnt care a less if people take Karma from me, it's all just a bit of fun and not to be taken personally.

I think you hit the nail on the head retroman, people who make half thought out posts are generally those that have +karma, so maybe a little food for thought for those that are in -karma!

I think that's all that needs to be said more or less...
Glad you agree, and you too Kizwiz [and thankyou.]

People could argue that they've fell victim to petty people, someone who perhaps had an argument with you then decided to subtract from your karma every single day in a bid for revenge.

But...

1. Very few people, no matter how lacking in life, tend to care enough to devote so much time to constantly decreasing your karma.

2. They'd only resort to being so petty if personally offensive comments were made/patronisation occured. I don't even think the lowest of people resorts to such measures because they lost a good, honest debate. So maybe you need to review your own behaviour in that case.

3. If someone really did seek "revenge" through karma subtraction for unjustified reasons, they're usually the one's with noticable attitude problems and should most likely be dealt with by staff/end up being banned sooner or later.

So I wouldn't worry too much.

I think they should be allowed, in a way it could be like bullying yes, but it's.. oh god i've forgottent the word.... begginning with a... oh god
ah yes
it's Annonymous
anyway, yeah it's annonymous so you can subtract karma without anyone knowing it was you so you dont have to feel bad about it and no one would really go around subtracting karma for the sake of it. if you get a karma put down u should probably try and think why and not do it again.

And like it's already been said you can take off your karma if u want

You can turn it off in your profile. That's what I have done the first second I've seen it appeared.
