It's not really feasible because of the number of legitimate metal objects people carry; coats, bags, laptops, literally hundreds of things you might buy in a shop and have in a bag (pots and pans, a kettle... Etc etc the list is endless).

It works at airports because there's time to process everyone, you put your metal stuff in the little tray and collect it on the other side, or store it in your suitcase. But can you imagine trying to run a system like that on the London underground? Or any city's major train station during commuter hours? There would be queues half way across the city. You'd have to leave for work at 3am
