Default Dark (German mystery, Netflix)

A missing child sets four families on a frantic hunt for answers as they unearth a mind-bending mystery that spans three generations.

2 episodes into this atm. Absolutely no idea what's going on other than that it concerns
Spoiler:

time travel
but the strange, enigmatic sort of shows are always my favourites . Very interesting so far and I've heard good things about it.

Halfway through now and I'm seriously enjoying it. Definitely complex and difficult to completely keep track of everything / everyone at times but I like shows that require a bit of effort to keep up.

Great to get confirmation that
Spoiler:

Mikkel and Michael are the same person, the idea got stuck in my head after I read the theory on an episode recap and this episode with Ines saying she had no children and Mikkel meeting a young Hannah seemed to make it pretty obvious so I'm glad it wasn't saved for a finale revelation as I'd expected. Since they've addressed that already it just makes me really excited to see what's still to come in the latter half. Knowing Mikkel never returns home and ends up committing suicide will add a huge tinge of tragedy to all of his upcoming scenes though (assuming he continues to appear)

Doesn't this make Jonas and Martha aunt and nephew though?

I love the use of split screen too,
Spoiler:

in the early episodes it really helped clear up confusion and keep track of who's who over the two time periods and it provides a great contrast between the past and present incarnations of particular characters.

Default Dark (Netflix)

It's also dubbed for people who hate themselves and don't want to read subtitles.

Ugh, I love this. I finished episode 5 earlier and it left me shook.

Spoiler:

I was so sure that Mikkel was the somewhat hot hobo-ish guy so the reveal that he was Jonas' dad all along snatched my wig tbh.

What a nosedive in quality this show takes after the halfway point of the first season. It went from being something great to being trash in a matter of episodes.

Spoiler:

Too many new concepts are thrown at the wall in the second half, adding two new time periods and characters like Old Claudia to the mix as late as they did was dumb. It all felt painfully rushed because of it. They should have just stuck with the 80's and current day as the time periods and give the characters in those time periods something to actually do.

In shows like this you need to answer as many questions as you pose to the audience otherwise the anticipation builds up to a level that will only make the reveals seem disappointing. The posing of questions in the last episode also fell flat for me. How are we meant to care about knowing any more about characters like Noah when he's one moustache twirl away from being a cartoon villain? The stuff with Helge was poorly developed and again, rushed.

The way that most of the characters got sidelined in order to make way for some hackneyed good vs evil battle for time travel between two characters we aren't given any reason to care about is also a terrible writing decision. No answers and the questions poised in the last episode ultimately not being interesting to stick around for means I probably won't bother with the second season.

This show felt like it wanted to be two different shows and the one that it ended up being was the weaker of the two.

You're not missing much, the first half is great, the rest is **** and retroactively makes what was good about the first half worse in hindsight.

I would agree with Dezzy about

Spoiler:

The last episode not answering many questions. I think it would have been more effective had they gone more down the mystery route, with it being revealed that Helge had carried out the kidnappings in order to prevent people arriving from 2019 and changing the past (after his bad experience with Ulrich), for example. Or any other understandable motivation.

I really enjoyed the series' atmosphere and found it very intriguing. I just think they should have simplified the plot a bit and had less characters (
Spoiler:

I found it hard to keep up with which 80s character matched which '19 character
).

Season 2 is out and there will be a third and final season. The show was apparently conceived as a trilogy so the entire story will definitely be told

I'm gonna have to rewatch season 1 because it was confusing enough at the time, I've forgotten so much in the time since I watched it. I remember that I loved it though despite being lost on who was who in the different time periods most of the time (was not sold on the apocalyptic future ending but the season 2 trailer has intrigued me to it). But it looks like season 2 is going very 12 Monkeys which can only be a good thing
