The protesters are getting violent because one of them lost an eye (supposedly fired by the police) and other protesters have been seriously injured including brain damage. They are accusing the police of using excessive force. That's why tempers have frayed in the last couple of days.

China will want to be careful because there are a lot of westerners in Hong Kong, and they signed an agreement with the UK when we handed it back that nothing would materially change to the rights of people in Hong Kong for the next 50 years

People just need to calm down a bit and return to peaceful protest.
