Prior to the last 4/5 years I'd have agreed with you completely. There has always been a far right presence, but they weren't in any way linked with modern day conservatism. However, in the last few years, we've seen Ukip force the conservatives to push a national referendum, we see concentration camps in the US, we've seen people on these very forums (who I woldn't consider Nazi's) talk about immigrants and refugees by using the very same terms used by the far right, and one member specifically talking about how the "re-education" camps in china were a good thing, and these are just a few examples. All of those things would have been unconscionable up until the last few years.
What people struggle to accept, is that Nazism wasn't day 1 - kill all the jews. In fact, there were arguments being made by jews at the time, that the Nazi's were only rhetoric and now that they'd got power they'd have to govern properly. These things creep, because if you told people of your plans from the off, then a majority of the people would be instantly turned off, so this incessant messaging about foreigners, others etc is all used as a way to condition.
Richard Littlejohn is the highest paid news columnist in the country, and he wrote one of the most Orwellian pieces after BJ pulled his prorogation stunt; he said he knew BJ was lying to the people, and he was glad he was doing it. Good, honest, hardworking people are just as susceptible to anyone as being brainwashed. We see highly educated people that know better joining religious cults, and yet people struggle often refuse to accept what is happening to themselves, and the hardening of their own beliefs towards other human beings.
