Yes, life before the EU when the EU didn't exist and there were long established traditional borders to navigate and a system for doing so. I'm not sure what makes you think we'll instantly revert to that and have the ability to travel throughout the EU freely? Especially when the entire aim of Brexit is to stop people from other EU countries from travelling freely into Britain? Is it that old Empire attitude raising its head again? "Oh we'll be able to stop people coming into the UK - but WE can still go wherever we fancy without hurdles."
I'm sure there will indeed come to be easy Visa-free travel between the UK and EU countries... unfortunately there is absolutely NOTHING in place for us crashing out with no deal, and you may find that popping to France for the day isn't as easy as you'd hoped.
