Trumps comments have made me want to watch the movie....

Whether he is being racist or not he is showing a lack of culture and its seems ludicrous that the PoTUS has such a strong opinion on the winner of aa film Award. Would he have had such a strong reaction if the winner was a British film? I doubt it, certainly not enough to mention it at a rally so I don't think its about he championing all things American

I took that as he just didn't like the film, but there again I have no feelings towards him one way or another and what happened to us all at least TRYING to be nice, I see the daft name calling has slipped into the thread again,as though that is going to change anyones minds.

While he is undeniably racist, I would call this example "dumb hyper-patriotism" rather than racism.

He is specifically irked that something "rly American wooooooo!" wasn't the winner, rather thank about it being S Korean. Its a "Only USA would be good enough" statement.

It's not undeniable. I deny it.

Undeniable by anyone willing to look sensibly at his comments and policies, then, and not just engaging in reactionary tribalism.

It really angers me when people make these blatantly false claims, because it trivialises the occasions when he is being racist. It gives people the excuse/opportunity to support Trump.

Those opposing Trump still haven't realised that doing this type of stuff, and they do it a lot, is actually giving him more supporters ... people never learn
We get it, accusations of racism upset you more than racism itself.

It's pretty ****ing racist to believe that something is of a lesser quality because it's Korean and that American products (Read: White, in his view) are inherently better.

People who pretend that they feel 'forced' to support Trump will have always supported him but didn't want to admit it. It's simply not rational or logical to claim otherwise. People don't go 'I don't like Trump but since people are calling him racist, I'm now behind him 100%!' They were just looking for a reason to 'justify' an allegiance they had to him all along.

I'm not going to bend over backwards to hold the hands of such weak creatures who will support a racist because they feel they've had a sleight against them. I also don't accept the bull**** centrist argument that people who oppose Trump are responsible for his dominance, that's entitled centrism if I've ever seen it and we all know that entitled centrists are just Right Wingers that can't admit it to themselves or others.

Reality marches on, it's simply a fact of life.... Unless you're saying you have control over reality and can deny it and thus change it at will?

Denying something doesn't make it less true. Whether you believe in something is irrelevant, it has no bearing on the truth and the facts.

It's more like populism because subtitled films - while liked by NY and LA critics, and arthouse fans - don't usually do all that well at the box-office, and don't get wide releases into cinemas.

Although Parasite has done fairly well after its awards success.

...I would say that many Oscar winning best movies don’t come under the populism umbrella though, so that wouldn’t really apply...if he stated the reason for mocking it and being derogatory about it in some way as it being a Korean movie...then that is showing prejudice, it’s that simple really...

I think you have all missed one part of what the Trusty Truthful Trump said in his excellent award winning speech.

(Praise so the acolytes of POTUS keep reading)

"“We got enough problems with South Korea with trade and on top of it, they give them the best movie of the year.”

It seems there may be a trade dispute between the US and South Korea?

So if a country is ripping your economy to shreds through unfair trade practices, and you give it some kind of award over home grown talent, how do workers who may be losing their jobs because of sharp practices over trade by that country feel? To give that country, a top award, is only rubbing salt in, to those workers who may be losing their livelihoods due to this country's sharp practices on trade

Should not the Academy of Film and Television be supporting its own people during this trade dispute rather than this foreign country who is crippling them on trade?

I suspect now that the money men will now go after the Academy bods that made this awards to root out all those who have been disloyal and are probably commies and those secretly supporting this evil country, who is waging an unfair trade was on the Good Old US of A.

Maybe after cleaning house at the Academy of those non patriots, they can revoke that award of best picture and hand it to a good old home grown talent

So not so much racism at all, but protection of the US economy from a country, that appears to the POTUS to be carrying out unfair trade practices.

The Trusty Truthful Trump is only standing up for his country and those who elected him.

It was an award for a film. It's really not that deep.

Yes... I'm sure he was furious when the King's Speech, Gandhi, The Artist, Slumdog Millionaire, Chariots of Fire and Oliver! won.

Just a guy having an opinion and look at the state of it now.

Luckily he ain't fragile...or his mind may wander to other thoughts after reading his twitter feed and the reaction to this.

Parm, I'm really not interested in your mocking of a young woman's suicide, direct those comments at someone else.
