I really enjoyed that episode. I think that was Jodies best performance so far 100% as well. The companions are still a miss with me, they’re just very obvious plot-pushers and they’re being used horrifically. Yaz is the only one with any potential but she needs to be solo to get that.

I did sit there in awe at Yaz and Graham talking to each other.

Have they done that before? There was even some banter too.

Usually they communicate via the emotional void that is Ryan.

The two of them work quite well together. It’s so painfully obvious that Ryan is the weak link. With a bit of character development, there could be a really nice relationship between Graham and Yaz

Tbh I’d rather them all just piss off and we get a new companion

It was a fairly good episode although Chibnall's piss poor cliche ridden dialogue is still a massive issue. I think Yaz and Graham were good for the most part but I agree that Ryan is the main problem. The actor can't act and the character is as barebones as he could be. The best thing they could do for this era is to have the campanions leave and start fresh with a single companion. The three companions aspect could have worked but I really think that none of them should be full time companions outside of big episodes because there's too many regular characters and not enough plot. This era would have gone a lot better if the Doctor just brought one or two companions with her an episode.

I preferred my assumption when the actors were announced, that Yaz and Ryan were uni students and Graham their tutor.

Maybe a bit close to Capaldi's university lecturer era but maybe a better set up so the Doctor could take different variations of characters each episode. Having them all hanging about every single episode with material that isn't even enough for even one main character is just odd.

I watched William Hartnells last episode the other day. I thought I better watch it while he’s still the First Doctor. I’ve got a feeling after this weeks one he’s not going to be number one anymore.
The Cybermen would have been pretty terrifying for the audience all those years ago.

I honestly think this is the best the Cybermen have ever looked. I think they are so hard to get right - most of the time they just end up as footsoldiers to a bigger villain (like the Master - and there's no saying that's not what is going to happen next week) and I really like Ashad as a villain too.
People won't agree with me, but say what you like about Chibnall but he is totally capable of breathing new life into old monsters. He made the Dalek in Resolution a formidable foe too. I'm honestly so excited for next week and I honestly think it's going to be an immense episode.
Graham is my favourite companion of this era. Bradley Walsh is more than capable of doing far more than he's been given so far.

Yeah admittedly I'd probably have started the flashback with him being in his late teens and then hopefully build from there to get to the present storyline.

This season has been okay, the worst of this year is better than the best of last season. It's still not great though, I miss Twelve and Bill

Do we think any of the companions will die/leave in the next episode? I just really hope legend Yaz survives!

They def need a new companion next year. Ryan and Bradley Walsh just aren’t really doing it for me sadly!

Spoiler:

I think definitely. They have already filmed the Christmas 2020/New Year 2021 special, which I'm guessing was to allow the actor(s) to move on rather than come back later in the year. And I reckon Ryan will at least leave, whether the others go with him I don't know.

I wouldn't mind Bradley Walsh staying on his own. I think that dynamic would've worked better from the start, a reverse of the usual older Doctor/younger woman companion. But at this point where Jodie is likely to only have 1 more full series and a couple of specials I reckon time for her to have a new companion. Someone new to work with.

Problem is, I can’t see a way in which Graham would stay with the Doctor, especially if Ryan dies.

Tbh Graham/Bradley Walsh is the only companion that I see potential in at this point, so like you I wouldn't mind him being the companion to stick around, if any of the companions stick around that is.

There's just a bit more gravity to his character imo.

I was thinking last night, Graham is as barely-written as Ryan - was he married before Grace? Any kids? Biological grandkids? He's the oldest of the three but has almost as little characterisation as any of them. But Bradley Walsh breathes such life into him you don't notice so much.

I don't think character necessarily requires a massively detailed backstory. We didn't need to know much about his life prior to Grace.

Grace was his wife, Ryan his step-grandchild and he was battling cancer. That's enough in terms of "character set up" the issue is in no personality or development from that.

Bradley gives the character more personality than is on the page. But that doesn't save the fact the character hasn't grown. That goes for all of them. They have enough character backstory/set up for all of them, family links, disabilities etc. However, it's just a list of facts about the characters that are referenced now and again rather than tools to tell a story. Really annoys me tbh.

Graham having 1 scene referencing a fear of his cancer returning is not character development.

I’d say that whilst Graham is probably the most developed character of the 3, the only one I have interest in seeing again is Yas - I think she has more potential.

Graham would’ve been more fitting as a temporary companion - one of those that tags along for 2-4 episodes in the middle of the series to add a new dynamic.
