To be fair, a lot of charity occurs when something "hits home" for people, it's not necessarily a cynical move. E.g. People who have lost someone to cancer are much more likely to support cancer charities.

I mean, I'd be lying if I said I'd ever given much thought to special education or learning disabilities, before having a learning disabled child. Now it's an issue that ticks away in the back of mind on a daily basis. Personal experience puts things on your radar.
