It's only part of the story, an earlier lockdown would not have been the silver bullet that it's now being made out as. We actually had fewer deaths in this country than Italy did when they locked down. My view is that there's a lot of inherent factors - population density, amount of international travel, number of large cities, presence of London, possibly high levels of obesity etc - that mean the UK would always have been one of the worst affected countries by this outbreak

It's not being made out as a silver bullet now. Lockdown in conjunction with contact tracing and isolation were always the most effective way to deal with it, but we were pissing about with "alternative strategies", Cheltenham, the CL match between Liverpool and Atletico etc.

I agree there are a lot of factors at play here, but we know what was working and Boris was instead talking of the financial opportunities being the only country staying open could bring.

Schools in Scotland aren't re-opening until at least mid August, and that's depending on how things look by then. Wee Nic being the sensible Queen of Scots .

I really don't understand the logic of going back in June - it's not long until the summer break anyway? Why not just let that be the natural buffer? I sort of understand getting those that are transitioning from Primary School to High School in for some prep work but it could literally be just that one year group.

it's about changing the mind set of people more than anything else. Stop people hiding in their caves and force them out to forage

Didn't this break last week, and its the independent SAGE group who are separate to SAGE group advising the government. Obviously the press have completely forgotton about schools opening since Doms story broke, shows how much they really care..... so they are bringing this back to the forefront again now

Some guy interviewed this morning said the government were amazed at the compliance to the lockdown as usually the GBP are very sceptical about the nanny state, so yeah I do think they need to force people back out who have literally burrowed under the duvet and plan to reimerge in 2022

Now or in September, schools have to adapt the way they teach, may as well dip their toes in to see what works and what doesn't

I’m guessing you are of the opinion of letting the economy crash and letting the most poor and vulnerable in society suffer not just during this lockdown, but post lockdown when they will inevitably be taxed even more (as everyone will be) for the longer we remain in strict lockdown because of the economic burden

The government are having to balance the economy and the health and it’s not an easy job, we are actually one of the last countries to send our children back to school amongst other things, the longer we wait is also causing damage also. It’s not as simple as you and a few others state of just extending all of lockdown further, there are other really important matters that play a part. Like I said earlier other countries have been doing as we are doing now and we are able to watch their results, and so far the vast majority of countries have not had negative results/ a second spike

The UK loses Ł70 billion every year through tax evasion, and is doing nothing to stop it. The bankers were given more in 2008 than the cost of covid.

If the poor are taxed more and have more of their services cut, then it's ideological not necessary.

Well I am afraid you are posting fake news again with a political angle

HMRC is doing very well catching tax fraud

Please read this report and maybe correct your post?

The number of US servicemen and women killed in Korea, Vietnam, Iraq and Afghanistan - over an aggregate 44 years of fighting - is almost exactly the same as the number of Americans who've now lost their lives to coronavirus in just three months of America's war against the hidden enemy

I’m very concerned with the way things are progressing ... the government are seemingly allowing the headmasters to have the ultimate say on if and when the pupils can return .. that kinda shifts all the responsibility on to their shoulders..

Boris is just saying that everyone will be safe if they keep the two metres rule in mind ... something that can’t and won’t happen in schools the length of the country ..

A government site saying the government has done well? Why opt out of the Euro-wide crackdown of tax havens, that folks like Jacob Rees-Mogg make a fortune out of?

So very true especially the population density aspect .

Just wait until tens of thousands flood into our country from Hong Kong as seems is a distinct possibility
