Gawd, can you imagine being hired as a casting director for this?! Whoever it was had to sit through probably hundred auditions of little girls twerking etc.

I don't care if the film does reflect the lived experiences of the writer/director, there are some things that shouldn't be depicted like that.

Re the poster thing, even if the one Netflix used wasn't the original poster, it's clearly a publicity shot taken for the movie, rather than a screengrab.

Some posts I've seen on twitter are calling the backlash to this movie "right wing", which I really don't get? Surely if any issue is universal, it should be the sexualisation of children, how on earth would anything think people taking an issue with the movie are automatically on the right?

Great way to shut down any dissent

True, but if being against that makes one right wing, then sign me up Scotty!

Indeed... thinking that exploitation in the name of art is OK is "edgy" - if you're not "edgy enough to get it" then you are not getting with the programme and - because one of the fundamental principles of tribalism is a lack of nuance and black-and-white thinking - you must therefore be "right wing".

I've seen a lot of people say that it's a great social commentary and a great film just with "a few shocking moments". These are real child actors and if you can't make your film without those shocking moments being explicit rather than implied, then it simply doesn't matter how important the message is. No message is important enough to exploit pre-adolescent actors who have no way of giving genuine consent, and no parent has the right to consent to this on behalf of their child. It's a step too far.

i'm not a fan of censorship particularly by twitter warriors. It's on a subscription service and we each have the choice to watch it or not. Why is it considered correct that we should dictate what others watch or don't watch. The programme will have been given an age appropriate rating like all other netflix shows

It features underage actors twerking their crotches at the camera and one scene of a topless pre-adolescent child.

I'd possibly even agree with you if this was animated or computer generated imagery, but these are scenes featuring actual children, they aren't characters, they aren't props, they aren't vessels for a message, they are actual people who have been used exploitatively without consent in the name of "creating art".

Again, its a step too far.

Also, I don't think the message is that regulatory bodies should shut down Netflix, its a call for Netflix subscribers to do exactly what you're talking about - "vote with their feet" and let Netflix know how they feel by hitting them in the pocket and cancelling their subscription.

Its gross

But then so is tiktok in the same kind of way, all these young teenage girls are all doing the same moves to pretty rude songs. Saw a video if my nieces dancing to one and I had an absolute go at them. No 13 year old should be dancing like that especially on a social media site where you dont know who has access to it!

I don't think you're entirely wrong and I think that is partly "the well intended message" of this film, however, I think the two issues are very different.

Kids doing these things on Social Media is a problem and comes from copying/learned behaviours but the ultimate responsibility in trying to get them not to do it lies with parents and guardians (and schools, etc.).

In the case of this film the problem is the imagery of actual children, massive consent problems and safeguarding issues. The film makers themselves aside - the responsibility of both buying the film to stream AND their hideous marketing of it are their responsibility.

This isn't about "cancelling" someone for a joke they made ten years ago. It's about child actors being exploited.
