John Wick 3
Another solid action film, but it has the same problems I had with the second one, if I'm honest. It gets too bogged down by it's own lore and this whole High Table stuff is beginning to err on parody with how theatrical it all is. It's still a good film though although I'm hoping the next one mixes things up a bit. 7/10 |

So I ordered the classic American Graffiti off eBay (Music Magpie's store on there) and was recommended another movie so got that too, both came to like £4 altogether so was fine... Anyway out of curiosity I played this other movie last night...
The movie is called Van Nuys Blvd (1979) and is basically about a guy from small-town America who travels to Van Nuys to experience the cruise nights on the Boulevard, back in the 70's when that's what teens and young adults did in many parts of America. The movie is WOEFUL. It's your typical 70's teen B-movie with the drinking, sex, cars, music but it just doesn't seem to gel for whatever reason. I thought it was going to be ALL ABOUT "the boulevard nights" but it ends up with the characters at a theme park, in jail, other random places. It's great to look at in the parts I expected (the cars, shots of the city/boulevard etc) but yeah, I won't rush to watch it again in a hurry... 4.5/10. Dazed and Confused with not even half the charm, basically. Last edited by LaLaLand; 22-09-2020 at 12:07 AM. |

Enola Holmes
For a film that's barely two hours long, it felt a bit long. That being said, I did enjoy it. Millie Bobbie Brown's a compelling lead, Henry Cavill makes for a decent Sherlock and most of the cast impresses although some of the more legendary cast members are woefully underused, which is a shame as the film has quite a strong cast and the fact that some of them are basically extended cameos hurts the plot a little as we don't get enough time to truly iron out some character motivations. Overall, it's a very light, easy and enjoyable film. 7/10 |

..Puzzle...it’s one of those movies that portrays characters ‘in the ordinary’, while the screen unfolds something quite delightfully extraordinary...it’s such a beautiful ‘people’ movie, a study of characters that’s just so incredibly touching...a carer in life, someone whose only thought is to care for others and their needs, finding so much in a gifted jigsaw puzzle...a life changing puzzle, giving a much needed sense of self...
...Agnes and Robert are perfectly and gorgeously portrayed by Kelly Macdonald and Irrfan Khan...just an incredibly touching people movie...... ...8/10 or maybe a bit more, I would say....... |

Alison's Birthday
Aussie horror from, i wanna say, the early 80's. For what it was, i really enjoyed it actually. 7.5/10 I wonder if anyone has heard/seen it? Don't go in the House Another early 80's horror. It was ok, easy enough to watch. 6/10

The acting is great as it the cinematography so it kept me until the end, however it is a slow, quiet movie and really bleak and doesn't let up... Like really, really bleak . I also found that the character motivations didn't necessarily make a lot of sense in the context given, especially the son, but I haven't read the source material so I don't know if that's carried over from there or if there's more information in the written story that was left out of the film, that fleshes out the motivations and relationships. 7/10, very watchable (so long as you're not looking for a feel-good romp lol) with some flaws in the plot. ...The Boys in the Band...I can’t really say too much about this because of giving any spoilers...it’s almost entirely shot within one place with no ‘locations’ at all other than the internal space it’s set in...so it relies totally on great acting/great cast.etc..on raw emotion and on great writing/script...all I can say really is that it’s set in the 60’s and a time when homophobia from society wasn’t the only ‘enemy’, self loathing because of sexuality was an equal enemy...maybe even more destructive...
...maybe one of the most emotional movies I‘ve ever seen and the cast/characters are superb...... ...10/10... |

I enjoyed it. I was expecting, from the premise, for it to be a typical Pixar tearjerker but it's not really. It's cute, inventive but perhaps a bit too slight. It's good that it's not Pixar holding your tearducts to ransom buuuuut it lacked the emotional payoff I wanted. Good but not without flaws. 7/10 |

..Dick Johnson is Dead......I know that this wouldn’t be everyone’s thing but it’s the most gorgeous/most beautiful tribute from a daughter to her beloved father, who has dementia../Alzheimer’s and the family has already lost their mother/Dick Johnson’s wife to the disease...I don’t think that I’ve ever watched anything that would be so deserving of 10/10....

Weathering With You
I love Makoto Shinkai but this is one of his weaker efforts, which, by normal standards still makes it pretty damn good. It's a gorgeous film to watch but it's story and emotional beats just don't connect as well as they did in Your Name, Garden of Words, 5CM per second, etc. It's a stunning piece of artistry and a great film by anyone else's standards but by Makoto Shinkai standards, it feels like he dialled it in. 8/10 |

...Elsewhere/Netflix.......it was sweet/sad/touching but it was quite difficult to connect with the characters completely and felt a little bit hollow...a nice watch, though...Ken Jeong is delightful......
