if they close pubs, people will just meet up elsewhere, probably in a lot less safe environment. People are at their limits in accepting restrictions, and this may well be the straw that breaks the camels back

Do you really think closing the pubs an hour earlier is going to drop the numbers of infections Arista? I don't

That Tim wotsit the wetherspoons guy has been quiet lately, his crappy pubs are a breeding ground for many things covid included.

I read something a couple of weeks ago, that around 70 of his bar workers had contracted covid.

Yep I saw that and that's just the ones reported, if you want a source for regional outbreaks in inner cities my guess would be start there.

Especially when you throw in the Galahad, anti-mask patronage of those places. Absolute breeding ground.

70 cases amongst 43,000 Wetherspoons employees

I think a 10pm curfew would be quite effective. It puts an end to the 'big night out' which a lot of people seem to have been returning to city centres for recently and stops people drinking to excess

70 bar staff (employee numbers represent different staffing positions) exchanging money with customers, holding the same surfaces, talking in close proximity. 70 infected bar staff isn't about those 70, it's about who they spread it to, who in turn then spread it on again, and again, etc.

Already scrapped the tracing part of track and trace.

No different to infections that have happened in any other customer facing industry which has happened all over, seems to be a bit of a snobbish attitude that because its Wetherspoons they must have not been taking any precautions although I think big chains are often a lot better at implementing the correct procedures

Last I heard track and trace were still reaching the majority of contacts and people were complying with isolating. Good news that the track and trace app is also launching this Thursday

That app is launching without trace.

I hold my hands up to the snobbish attitude towards weatherperspoons in general, but lets not pretend tim martin wouldn't have happily kept his pubs open throughout saying "you can't get covid in bars". He'd happily have killed loads of people if his bars would have remained open.

I read earlier that the app was without trace, but just read the gov said it will have trace so you were correct on that.

Yeah I saw there was some confusion with that earlier with some contradictory briefings going on

It will be interesting to see if the death rate correlates to the rate of infection, I'm with the theory there is more than one strain and hopefully the more deadly one is not the one currently rising exponentially.

I’m convinced that the severity of your illness is directly linked to the size of the virus load you are in contact with ..

Oh yes that too without a doubt, however some asymptomatic and others dying within hours?... surely that can't be the exact same thing? Regardless of age/dose that's extreme.

I'm sure they've identified "for certain" that there are two main strains, the first one in China was more severe but spread less easily (which would, if true, explain why China was able to stop the spread more effectively even with their huge population) ... the other strain is the one that is thought to have mutated in Europe (probably Italy) and actually is the milder strain - fewer severe cases and deaths per case but spreads from person to person much more easily. But that's already thought to be the one that has infected most of Europe, the US, and pretty much everywhere outside of East Asia.
