my area was way under the national average until we came out of lockdown and were placed in tier 3. Now, our rate is 4 times the national average at 600 ... it is only schools being open that could have done that so quickly

It is what it is, I guess. I think they are being overly cautious due to the Christmas relaxation. It doesn't make any difference to me but some hospitality businesses were praying for it.

Where my son's school is you can drive 5 minutes up the road and be in Tier 2. All the parent's are going after school tomorrow for food and drinks (not me, I'm not risking it now)

My friends work booked hotels in Warrington for their Christmas do (Tier 2), they all had scotch egg starters and got drunk

People will do whatever they want

Covid-19 in Proportion?

The UK Government has taken drastic actions to deal with Covid-19, but are these actions and fears in proportion to the reality?

Levels of mortality in 2019/2020 are very similar to those suffered in 1999/2000.

Quarantines and draconian interventions were not justified then and as millions of jobs are lost from the economy due to the lockdown, we must ask whether they are now?

In the following chart we can see that, in terms of overall mortality, 2019/2020 has been very ordinary for the under 45s: there has been no excess mortality at all for this age group[

If we compare Covid with 2017/2018, a recent season with high levels of flu/respiratory mortality we can note that:

Overall we are about four weeks worse than the mortality count for 2017/2018

Lockdown has had a minimal if any impact on in flu/respiratory deaths. If you look carefully you can see a slight dip in numbers to reflect delays to death registrations at Christmas. You might think that the lockdown would also have had a noticeable impact on the flu/respiratory data but it does not.

A closer look at the data will reveal that Covid infection rates were already declining before the lockdown which suggests that lockdown did not slow Covid infections either.

The issue is in the danger of hospitals being overwhelmed. We are painfully close to hospitals not being able to cope. Statistics for previous years are irrelevant in that context because hospitals have never been under such sustained pressure

We cannot go on like this. That is the substance of a letter from A&E consultants to the Welsh government to draw attention to the huge crisis in Welsh hospitals this winter.

"We have neither sufficient staff nor sufficient beds (in either acute hospitals or the community) to cope with the needs of an ageing population.

"We're on our knees as far as emergency care [is concerned]. There's good evidence that if patients are seen in emergency departments which are crowded, that are full, their treatment is delayed.

"That can actually cause an increase in the length of stay, it can make their illness more severe and in some cases it can cause death, so for safety and patient care we're very, very worried."

While the NHS in England is run by the Tories, the NHS in Wales is run by Welsh Labour. The two things that the health service in both countries have in common is that there are huge crises in hospital provision this winter and they are both chronically under-resourced.

According to TalkSport radio that 35,000 infections figure includes 11,000 from Wales that were missed from last week in a computer glitch ...Seems like an odd thing to do with the ‘daily’ update though ?!?!?
