Youngest isn't in mainstream so there's no impact on her learning being off (her language actually comes on more during periods at home tbqfh) and whilst she does enjoy it once she's there, if given the choice each morning, "NO SCHOOL!!" is one of her favourite phrases .

Eldest is 11 now and quite clued up so while she does miss seeing her classmates, she's old enough to understand the reasons. She also does well with home schooling and is ahead anyway, she starts high school next year but she's already beyond S1 level and it wouldn't really matter if she missed the rest of this year, education wise.

Again though I'm aware we're lucky in this regard, she has friends and classmates who were already struggling to catch up enough to be "high school ready" after missing the last 1/4 of last year... Another big chunk of time off really is a disaster for them in their final primary school year.

We've already made the decision that ours won't be going back on the 18th, and are going to play it by ear after that. They won't be going back until the current situation is clearly under control. But I am - as always - very aware that we're privileged to be able to make that decision as I can work from home indefinitely. We're actually even better placed to make that decision than in the first lockdown (my wife is in a new job, more money, and can work from home the vast majority of the time).

But there are a lot of kids who will fall through the cracks very quickly if they're not under the supervision of a school. That's the very sad reality of the school situation. It would be lovely if we lived in a world full of responsible parents who are equipped (financially, economically, intellectually if I'm going to be brutally honest) but we simply do not.
...schools would never be completely closed down, though...in that at risk/looked after children and any who have any assessed vulnerability would still be able to attend with key worker children...I would hope and assume that would apply to all school areas...there may still be times when that can’t happen though for short periods...and yeah, it’s the most difficult/upsetting thing to communicate with those who are hugely vulnerable in their isolation from a school environment ...

True, our youngest can actually go back at the usual time as she's classed in that group, I assume because a lot of the children in ASD provision rely on the routine and predictability of school for regulation. Although we've already decided that she won't be going back until her sister goes back.

However when it comes to actual mainstream classes, the sad reality is that there are multiple children in my older daughter's class alone (a small class, in a relatively wealthy town) who are quite clearly vulnerable and falling behind (frankly doing absolutely nothing when school isn't physically in) but who are NOT officially flagged by the school or social services as being in a risk category. During the first lockdown it ended up with teachers having to ask the kids who were attending if they had seen/heard from a two of the kids, as the school hadn't heard from them or their parents for over a month - clearly NOT an ideal situation to have to ask the other kids . In both cases, the kids in question had been heard from plenty on WhatsApp/Snapchat/Playstation multiplayer games etc.

And of course, to make matters worse, these are the kids who were already a little behind back in 2019 before any of these concerns.

It's not any shops duty to enforce the mask requirement and none of them do, so he is going to find it difficult to find a shop he can visit

I was reading about the cases where people have died after getting the covid vaccine.
They say it's not related to it, but it's hard not to worry

when 100s of thousands and millions are being vaccinated, and those being vaccinated are the very elderly and vulnerable, there will be occasions where people just die with no relationship to the virus or vaccine. It's pure statistics

Some people who are exempt have a green thing around them

We just need to be more strict with mask rules, higher fines and continue to do it... jail. If you’re going to be a selfish idiot then that’s what you deserve. When I was in Gran Canaria they were super strict with masks you had to wear them everywhere (except eating/sunbathing) or a fine on the spot 600 euros. They challenge anyone not wearing it. That should happen here.

Is this the breaking story .. something about all those having the first vaccine a couple of weeks ago have no idea when they’re gonna get the crucial second jab ??

Covid-19 second-stage vaccinations to be delayed across UK
Amid soaring death toll chief medical officers approve first doses as priority, with second jabs pushed back by up to 12 weeks

More than 500,000 people who have been vaccinated against Covid-19 will have their second dose delayed for up to 12 weeks as the NHS rethinks the rollout that is aimed at halting the surging death toll in the UK.
In a change of policy, applying across the UK, the NHS will now prioritise administering to as many people on the priority list as possible the first dose of either the newly approved Oxford/AstraZeneca vaccine or the Pfizer/BioNTech jab, so as to maximise the number of people protected against the disease.
Recipients will still get the two doses required to confer full immunity, but now the second will be delayed, in most cases coming 11 to 12 weeks after the first.

Previously, those receiving the Pfizer jab had a second dose-date set three weeks later on from their first dose. That gap was originally expected to be four weeks for the Oxford vaccination.
Sir Simon Stevens, chief executive of NHS England, disclosed the move in a letter to health service leaders in England on Wednesday, a day on which 981 more Covid deaths were announced. The move has been prompted by the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Authority changing its guidance on how the vaccines can be deployed.

Dr Julia Patterson, the lead for EveryDoctor, a network of grassroots medics, said: “This sudden change of plan from the government will heap enormous pressure on the NHS staff delivering vaccines, and will also cause anxiety for vulnerable people who have had a first dose of vaccine and now face uncertainty about when they will receive their second dose.
“The government should be swiftly recruiting an additional mass workforce to roll out the vaccines, for example by enlisting the army, and not simply load further pressure on to NHS staff.”

There’s some concerns from the company who ‘modelled’ that Pfizer vaccine as they were working on a 3 week gap between the two doses NOT 12 weeks !!

I did say that I had concerns about all this ....

Yes Great Idea.

The Group is called "Protest Everywhere"

[This comes after a stark warning from one of the nation’s top doctors, who is begging people not to gather for New Year's Eve.
Dr Katherine Henderson, the president of the Royal College of Emergency Medicine, described her experience in hospital on Christmas Day as "wall-to-wall Covid".]

The change in vaccination schedule is one of the more utterly ludicrous decisions that has been made, and that's saying something.

The vaccine IS NOT TESTED with a long gap between the first and second dose and the vaccine developers, manufacturers and testers do not make any guarantees whatsoever about the effectiveness of the vaccine with a several month long gap between doses. It is HIGHLY unlikely to be 90%+ effective.

You can't just do one dose and then have the second one "whenever" . There is literally zero information on whether or not this offers effective immunity.

Hopefully this is just for the early doses.

I for one will not be touching a vaccine until they're giving the second dose according to the tested, verified time-frame.

[Nightingale hospitals across England are being
"readied" for use if needed as COVID-19 patient
numbers rise.
The NHS in London has been asked
to make sure the Excel centre
site is "reactivated and ready to admit patients" as
hospitals in the capital struggle.

Other Nightingale hospital sites across England
include Manchester, Bristol,
Sunderland, Harrogate, Exeter and Birmingham.]
