Exclamation Snow for Scotland
Issued: 11:00 (UTC) on Wed 6 Jan 2021
A band of sleet and snow will arrive across northwest Scotland on Wednesday
afternoon and move southeastwards across most parts of Scotland
overnight, clearing southwards on Thursday morning. 1-2 cm snow is likely
to settle at low levels quite widely with 3-6 cm above 200 metres and up to
10 cm above 300 metres. Rain is more likely around some coasts, and snow
may also turn to rain at low levels inland before clearing to leave a risk of ice
on untreated surfaces on Thursday morning. Following the clearance of the
rain, sleet and snow on Thursday morning, much of inland Scotland will be
dry for most of the day. However, snow showers will then follow into
northern Scotland on Thursday, especially during the afternoon and evening.
A further 2-5 cm is likely at low levels with around 10 cm accumulating
above 200 metres. This warning will likely be updated on Thursday.

The UK recorded its coldest temperature since February 2019 on Tuesday after the
mercury plummeted to lower than -12C in Scotland.

The Met Office told the Evening Standard a temperature of -12.3C was recorded on
Tuesday evening at Loch Glascarnoch, near Inverness, making it the lowest minimum
temperature since February 3, 2019 when a temperature of -12.7C was recorded at
Cromdale, in the Scottish Highlands.

Spain records coldest ever temperature at -35.8°C



The record-breaking temperature was recorded at the Vega de Liordes weather station, located at an altitude of 1,874 metres in the northwestern province of Leon.

Scotland Weds could see a lot of snow as we have cold air meeting a creeping occluded front from the west. Some upland sites could see 30cm!

Friday 15 Jan - Tuesday 19 Jan
:
Mostly dry overnight. Snow Saturday morning, clearing later.

This Evening and Tonight:
Another cold evening with frost and patchy fog forming. Fog is likely to clear later in the night as cloud and strengthening winds spread from the west, bringing outbreaks of snow later. Minimum temperature -3 °C.

Saturday:
Cloudy and breezy with a spell of snow moving eastwards, turning increasingly to rain as it clears east in the afternoon. Several centimetres of snow are possible in many places. Maximum temperature 4 °C.

Outlook for Sunday to Tuesday:
Sunday and Monday will be largely dry with spells of sunshine. Cold overnight however, with areas of frost. Cloudy and windy on Tuesday with outbreaks of rain. Milder.
