The ONS reckon that 10% of the population have caught covid since the start of the pandemic. So multiply the current death rate by at least 8 before we get herd immunity. Granted 4 million vulnerable have now been vaccinated but there is still a pool of millions of vulnerable people that could be hospitalised and die from covid if it was allowed to run rampant. There will be a natural lull in infection as everyone starts to head outdoors come April/May but we better hope that all the vulnerable are vaccinated by September at the latest

3,505,754 'confirmed cases'.
Studies appear to show massive differences, 3x to 20x 'true' infection rate from 'confirmed' If you take 5x, which is obviously one of the lower ones, then that would be like..1/4 of the country? Add in vaccinated...and you don't need 100% for herd immunity anyway? Even if you take the 3x lowest estimate, thats 10m people, which is above 10% Might be overly optomistic. Or getting stuff wrong. But, seems an end is in sight to me like, especially with the vaccine being pushed out as quickly as possible. (Edit. Am not advocating the 'let it go wild and hide the vulnerable away' 'strategy' here mind. Just saying, that the amount already infected kind of..helps things along. Vaccine helps things even more)

Something this spreadable would not take anywhere near 5 years. In a weird way, the more transmissable one could be helping maters long term speaking, obviously not now. Such a shame we cannot do the vaccines faster really..as long as the vulnerable are not as likely to actually end in hospital, bugger everyone else. IMO. Its not dangerous for most and never has been. I say while 'suffering' 'long covid' myself

I cant believe people are having 15+ people parties though, thats insane. It has to be happening, or the number wouldnt be set that high.
I cannot blame people for the odd family meetup, especially when some have been told to stay away from family for 10 months. But having massive parties is ridiculous. And I agree with the fining. (that said, I don't think fining in general is..a good option really. It doesnt affect the better off at all, ad devastates the low income, which is kind of unfair) Though is it 800 per party? As as mentioned above, that works out as like 50 quid a person, and many would just take that risk really as its not that much :S

it's 800 for each individual that attends a gathering over 15 and it doubles after every subsequent meeting up to £6,400. If it was a total for the group it would encourage larger gatherings, if it was 1 fine for the entire gathering, it would encourage larger gatherings to reduce the fine for each attendee .... so thats a no no

Well Done
[Covid-19: NI lockdown to be extended until 5 March Coronavirus lockdown restrictions in Northern Ireland will be extended until 5 March, the first and deputy first ministers have said. The executive backed the health minister's proposal on Thursday, and will review the move on 18 February. This kind of thing is ****ing stupid to me. Why cant it start once announced? There will be parties now that wouldnt otherwise happen, to 'get in before the big fine'. Its like the stupidity of announcing on an afternoon that the pubs will close from midnight onwards, obviously resulting in packed pubs 5 mins later
