if BBC comes to an end, i hope vile ITV, Channel 4, Channel 5 and especially the nasty far right Sky will come to their end soon after

the bbc would do fine in the big wide world, the issue is purely over mandatory subscription which is probably 50 years past its sell by date

If they simply made deals to turn it into a Sky/Bt/Virgin etc. subscription package and also offered it online via iPlayer, I honestly reckon a majority would sign up anyway.

The secondary issue of course is that £14 a month or whatever it is now is far too steep, realistically the most people will pay is about £8-£10.

Indeed. Sky was owned by 21st Century Fox but didn't go with it in the sale to Disney, and was separately acquired by Comcast.

I rarely watch any TV channels these days, it's it's not on streaming, I don't tend to bother.

If they ended the TV license in place of a subscription fee, I'd support it.

I got sent this link to take part in a survey about the BBC -

https://www.bbc.co.uk/send/u61149175

I said I hardly ever watch BBC TV, but I visit the news site every day, and was favourable about the BBC because the they try to be balanced in its news coverage and it is a national institution.

I think I gave Youtube a higher rating in the "the following media organisations are 'for people like me'" section.

I’ve got zero time for anybody seeking to defund the BBC. The majority of them want the exact same service that they can go to at any time for nothing and have very little idea of how life works. It’s an irreplaceable institution.

The BBC and the battle for truth
Can the corporation save itself and the nation from
fake news and culture wars?
By Harry Lamber

[When the pandemic struck and the UK entered lockdown
for the first time, the BBC’s nightly news audiences
surged to 15 million.
Traffic to the BBC’s website in March 2020 almost
doubled year on year. Boris Johnson’s No 10,
which had briefed consistently against the corporation
and refused to allow government
ministers to appear on some of its
flagship news programmes,
suddenly understood how valuable
it was to have a trusted,
impartial national news source during
an emergency. Leading on-air editors
at the BBC watched with satisfaction
as the government’s aggression evaporated.

Yet the BBC is an institution in perpetual peril,
never more so than in this age of polarisation.
The need for a detached, fact-led,
impartial national broadcaster may be greater than ever,
but the appetite for so neutral
a service is quite possibly getting weaker
by the year.
In a crisis, the British turned to the BBC.
Over time, however, we have been tuning it out.
While its reach is almost universal in the UK,
people are spending less time with the broadcaster.
In an increasingly emotional news world,
the BBC can never be anyone’s echo chamber.]

I'm cutting the BBC cord again soon, Sky bill went up over £20/month since December with no explanation so I'm getting rid and switching broadband provider. We have a TV license because its hard to argue that you don't watch TV when you have a Sky subscription ... but we genuinely don't watch TV. We have Netflix, Prime, Disney+ and my eldest has a sub to some Anime streaming thing and that + YouTube/TikTok is basically all she watches these days. Youngest doesn't do "passive" viewing, she's all about Roblox and Animal Crossing and creative apps. I'm all about binging various series', and my wife doesn't really watch telly at all other than movies. We still w a tch various reality trash together but it's all streamed . Genuinely have no use for live telly and I think that's just the way things are going... Basically none of my daughter's friends (age range about 9 - 13) watch "old style" television. At all.

So yeah. A months notice to serve with Sky and then they can **** off along with the TV licence fee. Saving us like £80 a month in total.

Nah. 10 years ago, maybe... It's an irrelevance now. I still like a bit of Doctor Who but tbh I think it would likely be a better show if they sold it . The lore and intellectual property is better than the actual content currently... And that says a lot really.

So did i and i was not at all kind regarding BBC news which is unbareable to watch along with Sky ~ monotamy . i seem to find myself watching al jazera or the like cos at least there is some news, our news acts like we are the only people in the world and we actually wanna see whats happening in other countries instead of seeing same story 28 times a day by god squad Gillian , scared of everything and boring as a cup of cold tea.
