Relatives of one of the two men arrested for shooting crime journalist Peter R de Vries have told the Telegraaf that they have been overcome with shame about his involvement.

Delano G, 21, is suspected of shooting De Vries five times after he appeared on a television talk show last Tuesday. A 35-year-old Polish national is said to have driven the getaway car.

‘No-one knows what went wrong but his parents are horrified and such a murderous attack is no ordinary crime,’ a family member told the Telegraaf. The paper said it was approached by the relative and has verified their identity.

‘This has to stop. It can’t go on like this,’ another relative told the paper. ‘Lives are being ruined, from innocent victims like Peter R de Vries and our own family members. We want to save our family.’

‘Delano liked dancing and rapping and is super sensitive to status and attention,’ the relative said. ‘He had a lot of contacts with the wrong people from Nieuwegein, Vianen and Tiel. They are breeding ground for the big Mocro [Moroccan] gangsters. These lads get asked to put a bag of drugs or cash in a shed… and are gradually drawn in.’


Drugs crime

The Financieele Dagblad said in an analysis that the attack on De Vries ‘again showed how deep drugs-related crime has become embedded’ in the Netherlands.

‘Violence and billions of euros are disrupting a society which is not not exactly innocent when it comes to the success of the drugs mafia,’ the paper said.

Delano is said to be a nephew of Jaouad, or Joey W, who comes from Tiel, and is currently serving 13 years in jail for his role in what the Telegraph described as a ‘murder on demand’ service.

Jaouad, or Joey W is said to be linked to Ridouan Taghi, another gangster who is currently on trial with 16 others for a string of murders and other crimes. De Vries was supporting crown witness Nabil B in that trial.

Meanwhile, police sources have told the NRC that Saturday’s edition of television talk show RTL Boulevard was cancelled because of fears the studio on Amsterdam’s Leidseplein would be attacked by either a rocket launcher or automatic gun fire.

But neither police nor Amsterdam city council would confirm what the ‘serious threats’ made against the show, forcing its weekend cancellation, actually were. Peter R. de Vries was shot on Tuesday after appearing on the programme.

There have been two other high profile attacks on the media in recent years. In 2018, the Panorama magazine offices were shot at by members of the biker gang Caloh Wagoh using an anti-tank weapon.

And in 2020, two men were jailed for up to 10 years for an attack on the offices of the Telegraaf newspaper in June 2018. The men drove a Volkswagen Caddy van into the facade of the building on Amsterdam’s Basisweg and set fire to it, causing extensive damage.

Judges called the incident ‘a counter-offensive by organised crime aimed at the Telegraaf’ and ‘an attack on the freedom of the press’, although the precise motive was not established at the time.

The death of crime journalist Peter R. de Vries dominates the front pages on Friday, with photos taking up most of the cover of the Telegraaf, AD and Volkskrant.

The Telegraaf, where De Vries began his career in 1978, devoted its first four pages to giving friends and colleagues space to share their stories.

‘His reserved appearance, the piercing look and the nasal voice; they were a turn-off to some. But the people who knew him better knew that those wrinkles next to his eyes indicated humor and other emotions,’ the paper’s court reporter Saskia Belleman said.

‘Relatives of the victims of crime which De Vries took on, were crazy about him. If Peter got involved in your case, you knew that they would not be forgotten.’

De Vries was perhaps best known for his work on cold cases – ensuring that several high profile murders were finally resolved years after the fact. But he also fought for refugee rights and was a staunch critic of racism and far right politics.

Prime minister Mark Rutte said that De Vries was ‘always in search of the truth and justice.’ And that, Rutte said, ‘makes it all the more dramatic that such a great injustice has been done to him.’

In the Lange Leidesdwarstraat in Amsterdam, where De Vries was shot 10 days ago after appearing on a television programme, dozens of people have come to pay tribute and lay flowers.

Television talk shows on Thursday night were also devoted to De Vries, who was a frequent guest on many. In total, 4.7 million people watched one of more programmes, according to official figures.

Suspect in De Vries murder case tells court: ‘I knew nothing about it’

The man accused of being the getaway driver in the Peter R. de Vries murder case has told a court he had no knowledge of the killing.

Kamil E., 35, said he had been hired to drive 22-year-old Delano G. from Amsterdam, but was not told what business he had there. ‘I asked if it was something illegal, but I was told I had nothing to worry about.’

E. was giving evidence during an introductory hearing that marks the first day of the trial of the men accused of carrying out the murder of the 64-year-old crime reporter.

De Vries was shot on Lange Leidsedwarsstraat on the evening of July 6, as he left the RTL Boulevard television studio. He died in hospital nine days later.

The court was shown footage of the two suspects getting out of a Renault Kadjar on Prinsengracht about an hour before the shooting and walking together to Leidsedwarsstraat.

E. then got back in the car and drove around, while witnesses saw G. sitting waiting on a step until De Vries appeared at around 7.30pm. He then reached into his bag, pulled out a gun and shot De Vries, the court heard.

The two men were arrested an hour later when the car was pulled over on the A4 motorway near Leidschendam, after being spotted in the capital by a police officer on a motorcycle.

G., from Tiel, Gelderland, who appeared in court alongside his co-accused, exercised his right to silence when asked about the killing.

E., who moved from Poland to the Gelderland village of Maurik shortly before De Vries was killed, spoke in court through a Polish interpreter. He said: ‘Your honour, I haven’t killed anybody. I know nothing about the murder. I didn’t see any weapon.’

His lawyer, Ayse Çimen, said there was no evidence to show he intended to kill De Vries: ‘Searches have not found a scintilla of evidence that he was involved in crime or preparing an assassination,’ she said.

Prosecutors said a Louis Vuitton bag found in the car contained an adapted pistol which carried traces of G.’s DNA, while DNA from both men was found on a pistol magazine.

E. was also seen two weeks earlier in Amsterdam on what appeared to be a reconnaissance trip, the court heard.

‘In the eyes of the prosecution service these two are the men who carried out the murder,’ the prosecution said.

The prosecution has asked for life sentences for both Delano G and Kamil E, the two men charged with the murder of crime journalist Peter R De Vries in 2021.

De Vries was shot and killed in the city centre of Amsterdam last July, following an appearance on TV showbiz show RTL Boulevard. His murder, said by prosecutors to be connected to the ongoing trial of gangland leader Ridouan Taghi, was widely condemned as an attack on the press.

Video evidence The prosecution presented a detailed reconstruction of De Vries’ movements on the night of his death. His car could be seen entering a parking garage on the Lange Leidsedwarsstraat and then wearing a tan suit, he could be seen walking to the TV studio.

The two defendants were shown parking a silver Renault Kadjar along a canal and walking along the Lange Leidsedwarsstraat before returning to the car. According to the prosecution, Delano G then took a gun from the car, put on a hat and a black face mask and walked back to the street where he sat until de Vries walked by.

In the video, five shots could be heard and De Vries falls to the ground. The getaway car, driven by Kamil E according to the prosecution, meanwhile circled along the Prinsengracht.

Witnesses at the scene identified the car and police apprehended the pair on the A4 near Leidschendam. The murder weapon was still in the vehicle. Police also found a Google Pixel with text messages to an unknown person describing the murder.

The trial will continue next week and a verdict is expected on July 14th.
