Because it's an almost exclusively regional issue and that region's population is Muslim. The issues are perpetual war, violence and poverty and political ideologies - but it's hard to weaponise people (in general) without throwing a little dogma into the mix. We're seeing all sorts of cookie-cutter extremist values and rhetoric springing up these days and most of the dogma fuelling it isn't even "mystical" in nature, but nonetheless the mechanisms are all too familiar and exactly the same as in religious extremism.

Essentially... the population was religious and the religion happened to be Islam, and if people already have a head full of ideas that require a bucket and a half of cognitive dissonance and a distinct lack of critical thinking, you can use those ideas as footholds for other dogma, and tailor that dogma in ways that benefit [insert power/political goal here].

Heck... western political entities are soft-weaponising all sorts of nonsensical non-religious-dogma these days for disingenuous political reasons.

Afghanistan is tribal. That over rides any religious affiliation. Throughout the ages the various tribes have fought and they always will. That is the countries basic problem. The taliban can't control the country because there will always be another tribe that comes along to fight back. America and Russia have tried, and even with all the tech, they can't stop another tribe appearing. The taliban itself is made up of various tribes that will all revert to type as soon as the big invader is gone. The religion aspect is merely a method for one tribe to subjugate another

It's a moot and disingenuous point - army veterans aren't homeless "because there aren't houses for them" they are homeless because they have PTSD, associated mental health problems, and often addictions due to attempts at self-medicating that trauma.

That's not at all to say that ex-soldiers aren't horribly failed, but it's a failure of ongoing practical and mental health support for departing soldiers specifically, not because "refugees took all the houses".

possibly now a few diplomats and military personnel who have helped with evacuation to bring them home (118 people who want to evacuate had yesterday made it to airport just in time so some of those remaining can get a ride alongside those diplomats and military)
