Default Pestering women in the street or in pubs to become an offence

BBC Text:
[Telegraph says a review of hate crimes
will call for pestering women in the street
or in pubs to become an offence.
This includes making lewd comments
under plans to criminalise
"public sexual harassment",
the paper adds.
But, according to Whitehall sources,
the Law Commission will reject
demands for misogyny to be
made a hate crime amid concerns
it would be ineffective, the paper reports.]

Wasn't it already against the law to sexually harass women?

Also why are The Daily Telegraph talking about Sarah Everard when this law doesn't do anything to stop what happened to her? That was a Police issue, not an ordinary citizen being a creep issue.

Grooming and raping girls is an offence, doesn't mean it gets enforced.

Not in favour of this. Pestering is far to broad. Could those people who stop you on the street to do surveys or try selling you something be seen as pestering, I sometimes see it as that.

Is a guy plucking up the courage to ask a girl out on a date seen as pestering?

It'll get to the point where men will just totally ignore and avoid women for the chance she might feel pestered.

Maybe just enforce the law on actual criminals instead and we wouldn't need to go to these extreme measures.

It’s a joke
Women can’t get justice for being raped with men being let off with a warning or nfa, so the idea of people getting convicted for pestering is ridiculous

What we need is a much tougher justice system more women police officers investigating crime

And if woman are found to have made a false rape allegation they should be jailed for the same length as time as a rapist

I agree with both of these.

First, there's no point implementing laws that stop men from giving out unwanted compliments when they don't even bother to properly deal with actual harassment and assault.

Secondly, there's just no point implementing laws that stop men from giving out unwanted compliments.

They’re unlikely to have anything happen to them for the harassment/pestering however making it illegal means if they get reported every time, it’s logged against their name every time. Still unlikely to come to anything (verbal warning probably).

HOWEVER what it does mean is, if that man then goes on to commit a sexual assault or rape, when their file is checked it isn’t “clean” - it shows a clear pattern of behaviour going back over a span of time - which means they’re less likely to end up with a “soft” conviction for the assault because it won’t be seen as a “one off mistake”.

Fair point actually, hadn't thought of it like that!

I'm sure most women - and most men, come to think about it - will know exactly the men who this aimed at. Not men who ask if they can buy you a drink or who strike up a conversation, but the one's who won't take no for an answer.

Well that would be sexual assault, of course.

Exactly, I’ve lost count of the amount of times a woman has come up to me in a club in the past asking if I can’t pretend to be their bf because someone weirdo won’t take no for an answer.
