I recently upgraded my home theatre setup to Dolby Atmos, and what a difference .... it's just WOW
It's not as simple as just plugging in and listening though, there are a few gotchas in the way
The minimum requirement is that your TV supports Arc hdmi and dolby digital +. This will let you listen to compressed dolby atmos. To listen to uncompressed atmos you will need a TV that supports eArc and these only really became available in 2019/20.
The other gotcha is that most of the current streaming devices don't output atmos. The Amazon fire stick will output atmos for some prime content, but other streaming apps on the firestick like netflix, disney and apple don't consider it an atmos compatible device so you are stuck with dolby 5.1. The interesting thing is that the audio description in the content is dynamically set to what it thinks your system is capable of, so if you don't have what it thinks is a dolby atmos system, it doesnt show that as the audio format.
Enter the nVidia Shield. On this, you can set Dolby Atmos as an audio output option and as if by magic, you then have access to an absolute ton of dolby atmos content on prime, netflix, disney and apple
Hope this helps some of you who were thinking of taking the leap but didn't have a clue how to go about it
