A US teacher has been arrested after allegedly locking her Covid-positive son in a car boot to protect herself from exposure to the virus as she drove to a testing site, say local media.

Sarah Beam, 41, is reportedly charged with endangering a child.

A witness called police after hearing someone in the vehicle's trunk on 3 January at the site in Harris County, Texas, according to click2Houston.com.

The teacher reportedly opened the boot to reveal the boy lying inside.

Ms Beam said her 13-year-old son had tested positive for Covid-19 and she was taking him to the Pridgeon Stadium location for another test to confirm the result, according to local media.

She reportedly said she had placed the teenager in the car boot because she did not want to be infected herself.

A health worker told her there would be no coronavirus test until the boy was allowed to sit in the back seat of the car, reports ABC affiliate KTRK-TV.

Ms Beam has been working as a teacher at Cypress Falls High School since 2011, but is now on administrative leave, according to local media.

Cy-Fair ISD Police Department said: "CFPD was alerted that a child was in the trunk of a car at a drive-thru Covid-19 testing site earlier this week.

"Law enforcement conducted a full investigation, resulting in a warrant for arrest. Thankfully, the child was not harmed."

Sgt Richard Standifer, of the Texas Department of Public Safety, told local TV station KHOU 11 that the boy could have been seriously hurt if the vehicle had ended up in a collision.

"I have never heard of somebody being put in a trunk because they tested positive for anything," said Sgt Standifer.

Wont some of those deaths be deaths that would have been put down to flu in normal times though? The age of the people who died would be helpful

Flu deaths are not “bundled into” Covid deaths unless the person who died of Flu also had Covid, and I don’t think there have been any such cases in the UK yet.

i checked Arista's figures against the official figures because i just don't believe that the number on ventilators has stayed exactly the same across england scotland and wales for something like a month, but that is what is being reported. Something isnt right there for sure

But covid deaths are logged 28 days after testing positive for covid so there will be some other deaths in there that are not from directly from covid some of which could be flu...we don’t know

A small percentage yea but the suggestion is that all flu deaths are for some reason being logged as Covid deaths. Flu deaths might have been mistaken for Covid deaths way back when we didn’t have reliable testing, but since then, it would as you say only be a death caused by flu of someone who also had a positive Covid test within 28 days before dying. In all probability it will have happened at some point, but only a small number of times. Most flu deaths will not be mistakenly counted in Covid figures. There seems to be some confusion about why we’re “not hearing about flu deaths” but that’s just because they’re not logging flu deaths (or any other deaths) daily like they do with Covid deaths and, as it’s always been, you only get those stats for the full year, once they’ve been compiled.

Deaths from flu and other non-Covid-related pneumonia in England and Wales in 2020 were 20,523. This is largely consistent with pre-Covid years (approx 20,000 PA).

The data for 2021 will not be available until late 2022… they take a while to compile. But to say they don’t exist/aren’t being logged/seem to have stopped is nonsense, this data is easily and clearly available via ONS.

FWIW I think once the pandemic is “over” or more stable I think we will eventually get more accurate revised stats about Covid cases, deaths and fatality ratios. That will likely be beyond 2025. The data we get as “live updates” now is messy and unrefined… but as close to accurate as is possible without more in depth analysis.

Sooooo an interesting snippet

Close schools or not ?

It turns out in the Netherlands one in 5000 kids, who get covid, suffer from MIS-C (Multisystem Inflammatory Syndrome in Children) and the doctors have no clue how long this will last and what to do about it. On tv this evening they interviewed a mother of whom her little daughter (5 yo?) got covid, recovered, but suddenly after recovery a few weeks later almost was suffocating because of inflammations and still the kid hasnot completely recovered and still the doctors can't tell what or how long.

1 in 5000 equates to 1,780 when we’re talking about 8.9 million pupils attending 24,400 schools in England in (2020/21)

I am pig sick of hearing people say that those who die in road accidents are being logged as Covid victims

They should track these Covid conspiracy theorists down and lock them up .. they are having such a negative effect imho

But the sad fact is they are if they have tested positive for covid in the previous 28 days...so why are you pig sick of that fact?

it doesn't really matter how they collate data in the short term, provided it is done consistently, because what is most beneficial during a period like this is trends. Absolute numbers dont really mean anything to the layman.

Flu will still be happening, but the wearing of face masks, together with a solid uptake of the flu vaccine will have helped those figures a lot. The reason flu has been less of an issue the last 2 years is mask wearing and social distancing. It's pretty obvious really.

The same people vulnerable to covid are also vulnerable to flu so any mitigations against covid also help the flu

They are but for context, there are on average 4 or 5 road traffic deaths per day in the UK (1500 or so a year)… it’s not really relevant to say that 4 out of the 200 deaths might actually have been car crash victims. And that’s if all of those 4 or 5 were Covid positive within 28 days of dying which is highly unlikely. It will be at most one or two here and there. Not relevant at all to the overall stats.

I guess maybe people are massively over-estimating how many people die in car crashes?

(Thankfully) the truth about overall Death Stats is that most people die in old age (75+) and of various ailments, cancers, pneumonias, heart failure etc. but what could mostly just be termed “old age”.

Because the stories are undermining the issues ..

Too many now believe that it’s just a government hoax and nobody is dying of Covid ... it’s no wonder it’s spreading like wildfire in Gtr Manchester

Tbh this Covid stuff is just insane imo.

On one corner we've got people believing it's a hoax (like you've said) and some of them also seem to think that Microchips are being planted in people through the Vaccine (thank you YouTube & Twitter) and then on the other corner we've got the "it's the end of the world" camp.

To me I believe that people should be being happy that we're not in the situation that we were in during 2020, but also acknowledge that the disease does exist and is a problem.
