Default Middlesbrough fan arrested, left his 11 year old son in Hotel alone

[Police say an "unhappy mum" is on her way down
to collect the boy after his father was
arrested for child neglect.]

[A Middlesborough supporter has been arrested
after leaving his 11-year-old son alone
in a hotel room in Manchester
while he went out drinking to celebrate
the team's surprise FA Cup win.

Greater Manchester Police said
it had received a call of concern about the boy
in the early hours of Saturday morning.]

Is this that bad? Don't most kids start being left home alone for a bit once they get to secondary school age and a hotel is a pretty safe environment

The law says that an 11 year old can be left for 3 hours alone but only in daylight and not in inappropriate circumstances

According to the government website:

Quote:
The law does not say an age when you can leave a child on their own, but it’s an offence to leave a child alone if it places them at risk.

https://www.gov.uk/law-on-leaving-your-child-home-alone
I don't think an 11 year asleep in a hotel room is at particular risk

I have an 11 year old. I will leave him to pop to the shop (never normally longer than 30mins) but wouldn't leave him at night. I would imagine he may have been upset or something for a call of concern to have been made. He probably woke up and dad was not back. Its pretty irresponsible to leave a kid in a strange room in a strange city to be honest

There is a difference between letting an 11 year old child at home alone for a short time but in a hotel room in a strange City, its clear it was an issue as the child must been scared and alerted staff...so a glorious occasion for them tainted by selfishness basically

The article says he was found sleeping in the hotel room so I wonder if a member of staff took it upon themselves to call police rather than the kid acting

Dad had a great evening at the football with his lad, put him to sleep in a safe hotel, then popped out for a couple more celebratory pints. Arresting him for neglect seems a bit ott

Hang on, we do not have the full story
like Annie stated
he could have been in a panic.

The kid is 11.....it isn't safe to leave a kid unattended at 1am whilst you're out on the piss in Manchester. Not sure if neglect is the right thing but it was pretty irresponsible as a parent.

Anyway yeah popping to the shop, sure, but gone for hours no and also late at night (it says "the early hours of the morning") definitely no. And away from home that goes double.

If he was a bit older, say 14+ then I'd judge less - I wouldn't personally even at that age but I'd be less harsh on someone else doing it (I myself was often at home on my own until 6 or 7pm after school in my early teens) - but 11 years old? That's still just a kid. My daughter is 12 and yes it's a strange age where there are times when they can SEEM older than they are but then they watch one too many spooky videos and are too scared to go up to bed by themself and you realise they're still a baby in many ways.

Not sure what could be safer than a hotel room really. Always locked to anyone but the key holder, no doubt there's plenty of cctv and security, and most hotels you can't even get access to the building unless you're a paying guest

Pretty sure on family holidays my brother and I would have a separate hotel room next door to my parents at that age, far all we know maybe they did go back out for a drink while we slept

What would be safer is a responsible adult in the room with him instead of leaving him to go out drinking.

A hotel in Manchester on a saturday night especially when a big game is on is not a place for a kid on his own.
