Yep this seems to be basically what happened before - equipment from elsewhere had been brought in, Russia waited until it was stockpiled at a base within Ukrainian borders, then hit it with missiles. That's the "loophole" that allows them to target these shipments; they can monitor them until they make landfall, and then destroy them.

See I do think there's a parallel here but it's not one that ends well for the first bullied kid, or for Ukraine, in this allegory.

If a lone kid is being picked on by bigger bullied and punches the biggest one and busts his nose... the bully isn't going to run off crying. That kid is going to get the living **** kicked out of them. That's just the real world which unfortunately is not an episode of Grange Hill. The bully is going to want to save face, and get revenge. They're going to start swinging.

BUT... what might happen... is that the bully with the bust nose will think twice before bullying that kid again, and before bullying any other kid, because while they know they're bigger and stronger and can ultimately beat that kid to a pulp, they still don't want two black eyes and a bloody nose.

You could apply that here and say that if Ukraine had rolled over, it's inevitable that Russia would have then moved on to other ex-soviet states. The way things are now, Ukraine is going to come out of this beat to a pulp, but Russia has suffered heavy losses and will DEFINITELY think harder before engaging in a similar war again. I think there are actually a lot of similarities to the US in Vietnam, in the sense that the "much bigger force" thought it was going to be a cakewalk, but ended up in a blood-soaked nightmare.

I agree but on the other hand, there are several US/UK led invasions that involved all of that. Civilian deaths are deemed to be "actually the other side" or "unintentional collateral" but then, that's what Putin is telling Russia .

The uncomfortable reality of course is that all of these wars at the end of the day are about resources. I say that without moral judgement I suppose. We've been in a resources crisis for over half a century and what can any country really do but try to shelter their own people from the worst of it (which is coming within the next half century).

what many people dont seem to realise/acknowledge is that to level ukraine, russia doesnt need an army. A few well aimed missiles will do the job. All the fighting at the moment is unfortunately a side show as russia hasnt flexed 5% of its capability

Perhaps but it's certainly not "not an issue" for them that they've severely depleted their standing army (both in terms of personnel and equipment) far beyond what they expected. They could level Ukraine, yes, but it's going to take them a minute to be in any sort of position to threaten a similar invasion elsewhere.

russia have already scaled back their ambitions from recovering the soviet era territory across europe to capturing a region of ukraine that in the majority is sympathetic to russia, so, in terms of conventional war they are ****ed for at least a couple of years. It really depends what their future aims are, flattening a country is not going to expand their reach, influence or wealth
