“Draw your own box. White. Black. Hispanic. Asian/Pacific Islander.
Those were the only four options available for me to check as my ethnicity in my 7th grade English class. Choose one. It was some sort of mandatory census that had to be completed before an exam, and there I was (my curly hair, my freckled face, my pale skin, my mixed race) looking down at these boxes, not wanting to mess up, but not knowing what to do. Not knowing which box I fit in to.
I remember going home that night and telling my dad what happened, recounting how my teacher said to just “choose one” - that despite my being biracial, that I should simply choose one box and be done with it. And in one of those parenting moments that no guidebook could ever prep you for, my dad said words that will stay with me forever: “Draw your own box.”

This is the same man who took apart two Barbie boxed sets (because you could only buy a white Barbie or a black one), and made a custom one to bring home to me - his speciality set included a black Barbie mom, a white Ken doll dad, and two kids - one black and one white. I picture him standing there in Toys R Us, moms glaring at him for taking the toys apart, perhaps an employee saying “excuse me sir, you can’t do that” - as my dad carefully separated the boxed sets to make one that echoed my reality. One that showed me that I should (and could) make my own box.

In celebrating Father’s Day, I think of so many moments with my dad. Our club sandwich & fruit smoothie tradition post my tap & ballet class - classes, which by the way, he religiously took me to on Saturday mornings after working 75+ hours a week as a lighting director. The fishing trips along the Kern River and Big Bear Lake to catch catfish or trout and cook it up for dinner, and the commitment he made to lighting my high school musicals so that they felt as grand as a Broadway show.
The blood, sweat and tears this man (who came from so little in a small town of Pennsylvania, where Christmas stockings were filled with oranges, and dinners were potatoes and spam) invested in my future so that I could grow up to have so much.

He helped me turn my bathroom into a darkroom when I was twelve because I wanted to be a photographer - shading my windows in red lighting gels and filling my cabinets with extra jugs of fixer. He put gas in my car when I went from audition trying to make it as an actress. He is the person who believed in this grand dream of mine well before I could even see it as a possibility. He taught me to write thank you notes, to always arrive early, to drink Arnold Palmers, to find my light when I’m on camera…and beyond.

And that, right there, is the point: my dad taught me to find my light. And he taught me to always make my own box.
To my dad - my thoughtful, inspiring, hardworking Daddy - Happy Father’s Day. ‘If I had all the water in the world, I’d give all the water to you…’ (You won’t get that quote, but he will. And for Father’s Day, that’s all that matters).”
- Meghan Markle, June 2014

Terrible Dad obviously

Obviously people are getting desperate to slate Meghan to keep up their obsession. To me people are gross to try and use this against her when people have lost their lives and loved ones, it shouldn’t be about Meghan but her haters are more concerned what she does than what happened.

If people weren’t being vile then maybe they won’t be a swear word. At least I’m not using something tragic as an agenda to slate Meghan and others

If she went to the hospital to visit her dad you all would slate her. Anyway you don’t have to know people to pay respects, a lot of Americans paid their respects to the victims and they have no relationship with them. Just Americans coming together over a tragedy that happened over there. The whole fake concern about her father is boring and to use that for agenda over a tragedy is a questionable. A person don’t have to visit someone in hospital when they have no relationship.

If she visited her dad , it wouldn't necessarily mean they've 'made up' . And she would still be seen as doing it to 'make herself look good' . Maybe if the dad & sister would stop trash talking her then they might get somewhere with her. But I think it's past that now.

Harry didn’t accompany Meghan to Texas because he said ‘the timing was wrong’. He was right. You don’t sweep in with your security men and a hired cameraman just days after a tragedy and before the President of the USA who was timing his visit appropriately to later in the week.
She flew there and back in a luxury private jet and paraded around for ages with cameras trained on her and posed with volunteers.

‘Paying her respects’ appropriately would have been sending the families a private note and donation or insisting her visit was private, not making sure the world captured her ‘compassion’ for all to see.

Meanwhile her father was seriously ill in hospital not that far away from her.
Meghan’s ‘compassion’ is always opportunistic. Every.single.time. She has form.
She plays her unquestioning fanbase like fiddles and they are duped every time. imo.

What has her Dad said about her that 'trashed' her? That he is desparate for her to contact him? That she isn't behaving like the lovely Meghan he knows?
That he doesn't understand what is going on with her? That's about the height of it.
On the other hand, he has called Harry an 'idiot' and some other choice words.

That she would have more empathy for violently murdered children than a father she has a broken relationship with? Nope.

It's more than tragic ,this is a regular occurrence in America with the gun violence. And it's horrific especially innocent children. So that's my focus ,not whether Meghan is looking for an "opportunity" .

But the killing of those kids didn’t stop you coming in this thread

So your focus means the same as anyone else and considering the amount of time you spent in the Jonny and amber thread it makes you a hypocrite

How do you know what people care about? Do they have to splash what they did to show they care and what they feel privately all over the internet complete with details and photos to prove it like the 2nd rate actress who thinks she is now so important that she must visit the scene, wait for it! - ‘in person’, as she stated? She blessed the bereaved with her actual presence, and was kind enough to share it all with the world, isn't she just wonderful!

She diminished the deaths of those children by trying to make herself look like a caring person.

Then her dad collapses and she shows nothing..

It's as simple as that, make your own minds up.

…and I could not agree more. But that’s a separate issue. That does not mean people cannot have an opinion on what Meghan’s motives really were.
There are some very self centred, manipulative people in this world and they will take any opportunity, however tragic, to monopolise their crave for attention…and Meghan imo is one of them.

Hmm... Interesting I don't remember people getting this annoyed with Bojo & Patel last year.... on remembrance day, when they were 'paying their respects '. People get more angry & upset with Meghan, than the fat cats running this country into the ground.

Boris is the Prime Minister and Patel the Home Secretary, officially representing the government at a service in their own country for their own countrymen/women. It's what prominent, elected officials do, not nobodys like Meghan making a display of themselves in a US state they have never lived in or had any connection to.

They've shown more anger and upset towards Meghan for paying tribute than to an actual child murderer. If that doesn't put the level of bitter, twisted hatred into perspective...
