Default Jack Russell to be put down under dangerous dog Act

85-year-old Donal Rogers, a retired Garda, has spoken of his heartbreak at the prospect of having his beloved dog forcibly put down.

Donal lives in a quiet area, and shares his home with a 9 inch tall female Jack Russell named Kim.

Until recently Donal and his beloved pet enjoyed a simple life together spending long periods in the garden or Donal’s car.

About two months ago Kim bit one of a small group of passers by outside Donal’s house. “My little dog was lying in the sun on the front lawn of my house on a Sunday morning”.

He continued ”Strangers came down the road, walking, and she ran out on the road, and she nipped the person on the leg”.

Donal’s house is at the top of a hill on a very quiet road surrounded mostly by fields.

He says he immediately apologised to the woman’s husband who came and knocked at the door after the incident.

He says, “I offered to take her to hospital, but she refused to travel with me”.

The woman, who is in her 60s, was taken to hospital by a neighbour of Donal’s and had her wound treated before being sent home.

Sometime later Rogers says he received a court summons and that during subsequent hearings the woman demanded that Kim be destroyed. He says he offered to compensate her financially, as the dog means a lot to him and has no history of biting or other unruly behaviour, but that the woman did not relent.

He says that his pleas have fallen on deaf ears and that an order for Kim to be put down was granted.

Donal, who lives alone, has vowed to keep fighting to save Kim saying “I’d miss her very much if she was taken away from me.”

“I bought her as a pup, and I reared her myself, and I gave 100 euros for her”

Rogers says Kim sleeps at the foot of his bed at night and is great company for him, especially in winter.
