Health Minister Robert Jenrick has confirmed that Aiden Aslin, who was sentenced to death after being captured by Russian-backed forces in eastern Ukraine is among those who have been released in a prisoner swap between Ukraine and Russia.

Aslin, 28, was captured along with Shaun Pinner in April while fighting with the Ukrainian Marines.

"Aiden’s return brings to an end months of agonising uncertainty for Aiden’s loving family in Newark who suffered every day of Aiden’s sham trial but never lost hope," Jenrick wrote on Twitter. "As they are united as a family once more, they can finally be at peace.

Russian police are reported to have arrested hundreds of protesters rallying against the Kremlin's decision to call up thousands of extra troops to fight in Ukraine.

Russian human rights group OVD-Info put the total at more than 900. The largest number arrested was in Yekaterinburg, a major city east of Moscow.

Dozens were also detained in Irkutsk and other Siberian cities, and Moscow.

Flights out of Russia sold out fast after Vladimir Putin's announcement.

Russia's president ordered a partial mobilisation, meaning some 300,000 military reservists - but not conscripts - will be drafted to bolster Russia's forces who have suffered recent battlefield reverses in Ukraine.

The move came a day after occupied areas of Ukraine announced snap referendums on joining Russia.

And in remarks condemned by Ukraine and its allies, Mr Putin stressed that he would use "all available means" to protect Russian territory - implying this could involve nuclear weapons.

Queues have sprung up along Russia's border as men attempt to leave the country to avoid a military call-up for the war in Ukraine.

President Vladimir Putin announced a partial military mobilisation on Wednesday, which could see 300,000 people summoned to serve in the war.

The Kremlin says reports of fighting-age men fleeing are exaggerated.

But on the border with Georgia, miles-long queues of vehicles have formed including men trying to escape the war.

One man, who did not want to be named, told the BBC's Rayhan Demytrie he had grabbed his passport and headed to the border, without packing anything else, immediately after President' Putin's announcement - because he fell into the group that could potentially be sent to the war.

'I will break my arm, my leg... anything to avoid the draft'
Some witnesses estimated the queue of cars at the Upper Lars checkpoint to be some 5km (3 miles) long, while another group said it had taken seven hours to get across the border. Video from the scene showed some drivers leaving their cars or trucks temporarily in standstill traffic.

Georgia is one of the few neighbouring countries that Russians can enter without needing a apply for a visa. Finland, which shares a 1,300km (800 mile) border with Russia, does require a visa for travel, and also reported an increase in traffic overnight - but said it was at a manageable level.

Other destinations reachable by air - such as Istanbul, Belgrade or Dubai - have seen ticket prices skyrocket immediately after the military call-up was announced, with some destinations sold out completely. Turkish media have reported a large spike in one-way ticket sales, while remaining flights to non-visa destinations can cost thousands of euros.

Germany's interior minister signalled on Thursday that Russians fleeing the draft would be welcome in her country.

Nancy Faeser said deserters threatened by "severe repression" would receive protection on a case-by-case basis, following security checks. Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia and the Czech Republic struck a different tone, saying they would not offer fleeing Russians refuge.

Russia :
[724 people were detained across 32 different
cities on Saturday.
Widespread demonstrations have broken
out since President Vladimir Putin announced
plans to draft 300,000 men to fight in Ukraine.

Unsanctioned rallies are banned under Russian law.
But Mr Putin's move to draft civilians into the
military has sparked large scale protests in
urban areas, with more than 1,000 people being
detained at demonstrations earlier this week.]

Referring to a time he was stabbed in the back with a knife, Mr Aslin said: "I knew there was a very high possibility I was about to be killed."

He was then asked by a Russian who was guarding him: "Do you want a quick death or a beautiful death?"

Answering a quick death, Mr Aslin was told: "You're going to have a beautiful death and I'm going to make sure it's a beautiful death."

He said he was beaten for having a tattoo of a Ukrainian trident and for one showing his time in Syria.

Mr Aslin said he was kept in a two-man cell with four people and had to sleep on a mat infested with lice.

"We couldn't go to the toilet properly because we didn't have a toilet", he said, adding that they had to use empty bottles.

Mr Aslin said he survived for three weeks eating pieces of bread and water - and "eventually we had to beg them to give us tap water".

There was a window in the cell, but it had "nothing to protect us from the outside elements" he said, which led to it being cold in the winter.

Talking about when his passport was checked, "as soon as I said Great Britain I got a straight punch to the nose" he said.

Mr Aslin said the only time he was let out was to do propaganda or take phone calls.

Default Russian Invasion of the Ukraine - The Official WW3 Thread

So when Putin announced he was gonna conscript 300,000 men he then didn’t guard the airports or customs so vast numbers flew one way out of Ukraine !!

So now he’s taken paedophiles , sex offenders , rapists and murderers as ll prisons and flying them to the Ukraine !!

The Kremlin has admitted mistakes were made in its drive to mobilise Russian army reservists to fight in Ukraine, amid growing public opposition.

"There are cases when the decree is violated," Russian President Vladimir Putin's spokesman said, adding that "all the errors will be corrected".

Multiple reports say people with no military experience - or who are too old or disabled - are being called up.

Last week's mobilisation decree has already triggered widespread protests.

President Putin announced what he described as partial mobilisation on 21 September, with Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu later saying 300,000 reservists would be called up.

However, reports in opposition Russian media suggested that up to one million people could be called up, pointing out that one paragraph believed to be about the exact number of the required reservists was omitted (classified) in the published version of Mr Putin's decree on the official Kremlin website.
