The REAL real reason is that the first Star Wars was written as a standalone movie, and both trilogy sequels (and then the prequels ... and then the sequel trilogy) were written afterwards. Most of Anakin Skywalker's pre-Vader history is one big ol' retcon

. And the sequel trilogy is basically a bad fan fiction.
