Dear oh dear Oliver, what Brit-washing . The continental United States was colonised by Britain, Spain, France and The Netherlands, wasn't unified under Britain until the 1600's, and didn't become a country in its own right until the 13 colonies in 1776 - like 300 years after the start of colonial America.

Canada was only colonised at all by Britain and France and has a completely different political history in terms of being unified into one country.
