I think it was this type of thing that brought out strong emotions and opinions in viewers, and which made for more heartfelt and in-depth discussions. Any thing that brings out strong emotions in us makes us feel more engaged and invested. Maybe that is what you feel is missing at this stage?

The show has to be different these days, though, because the general view of what is acceptable to say, do and televise has changed so much. I think the depth will develop as the true characters of the housemates are revealed, and stressors increase.
