I'm not saying that what she did is a proportionate response necessarily and obviously it's a life changing injury - BUT - I reckon he's an aggressive bugger who went for her cos he was angry, and I reckon his wife has most likely left him for the same reason. People's partners don't leave them because they got injured. The might leave them if their anger/frustration about the injury is being taken out on the family though.
I was thinking the same. The part I quoted, it looks like he tried to grab before she attacked him? The wording isn't really clear, it could mean that his grabbing of her helmet was trying to repel her, but I'm not so sure.
