[Plans to build the UK's first deep coal mine in more than 30 years have been quashed. Two campaign groups had brought legal action over the previous government's decision to grant planning permission for the site near Whitehaven in Cumbria. At the High Court, judge Justice Holgate said the assumption the mine would not increase greenhouse gas emissions was "legally flawed". Victoria Marsom from Friends of the Earth (FOTE) said campaigners had won "a massive victory".
