[Cancellation comes a few days after
Colbert criticised network’s parent company for settlement with Trump, which he called a ‘bribe’ ‘I am extremely sad’: celebrities react to the end of Stephen Colbert’s Late Show Stephen Colbert on Trump’s Epstein controversy: ‘Desperately looking for a scapegoat’] It is a shame it is not on UK TV [The settlement coincided with Paramount seeking approval from the US Federal Communications Commission for an $8.4bn merger with Skydance Media. Colbert called the settlement “a big fat bribe”. Colbert, who has hosted the talkshow since 2015, announced the news during Thursday night’s recording, telling the audience he had been told of the decision the previous night. As the audience booed, he said, “Yeah, I share your feelings. “It’s not just the end of the show, it is the end of the Late Show on CBS. I’m not being replaced, this is all just going away,” Colbert said.] https://www.theguardian.com/tv-and-r...s-cancels-show |

Traditional TV and a lot of it's tropes are going away.
Some of it is for the better, some of it is a sad loss to Entertainment Programmes on Streamers as they can sometimes lack the charms of a Network or Cable Show. Flaws and all. Tbh I never watched Stdphen Colbert's Chat Show, but it is an end of yet another long lasting TV Show from America's bygone era that they'll never get back in that type of way ever again. It's sad to see imo.

His bosses sacked him because Trump wasn’t happy with someone telling the truth about him, typical dictator nonsense, shame on any media companies that bend the knee to authoritarianism

[The CBS network insisted that it had
made “a purely financial decision” to wind up The Late Show next year. But others are not so sure. Adam Schiff, a Democratic senator who was a guest on Thursday’s show, tweeted: “If Paramount and CBS ended the Late Show for political reasons, the public deserves to know. And deserves better.”] https://www.theguardian.com/culture/...ount-cbs-trump |

Well you will be doubly shocked to know his information is rubbish
![]() He was losing £40,000,000 a year Advertising revenue for Colbert's show has dropped 40% since 2018 - the financial reality that CBS said prompted the decision to end “The Late Show” in May 2026. One former TV network executive said the program was a casualty of the fading economics of broadcast television. His type of show is yesterday's news |

The timing does feel a bit odd, but admittedly the loss financial loss does look extreme.

[Coincided with
Paramount seeking approval from the US Federal Communications Commission for an $8.4bn merger with Skydance Media. Colbert called the settlement “a big fat bribe”.] [By July 2, 2024, Skydance renegotiated the deal and reached a preliminary agreement to acquire National Amusements and merge with Paramount. The deal was referred by National Amusements to Paramount's special committee. Also, Paramount reportedly entered talks for a sale of the BET Media Group to buyers led by BET CEO Scott Mills for $1.6–$1.7 billion] [NY attorney general Letitia James to look into wrongdoing at Paramount as a result, specifically investigating whether "The Late Show’s cancelation is a bribe, sacrificing free speech to curry favor with the Trump Administration as the company looks for merger approval".] https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paramount_Global |

Finally, a dignified death. It hasn't been right since Letterman left. I liked Letterman at his peak. Colbert was cool and funny when he was playing a character on Comedy Central. Not so much playing himself on Late Night, unless you like snobbish characters whose only bodily function is snark.

Still, it's mostly a Hollywood problem. People can work in most other creative industries and find like energies without having to directly be confronted with this issue... There are sizable portions in even smaller niche industries deal with people who that think that all creative talent must be used at all times to promote their propaganda... and if it celebrates ideas than what it deems to be a noble deed, it's not Avante-garde enough (ie uncultured) or it has other purposes... basically elitists who use the popularity of politics to control the gates to that industry, because creative industries generally are highly competitive, but they're also shrinking due to the increasing accessibility to tools that allow anyone to become a creator... In the graphics space, companies like Canva have tried to get in front of that shift and capitalize. They even use words like they are "democratizing" the creation of works but at least still attempt to appeal to the same set of ideals... I'd say Youtube is technically the earliest example of a platform putting individual creators first, but with it obviously not being intentional as we didn't know what Youtube would end up looking like. Network TV won't even admit they're in direct competition with this, so not surprising their content has gone off the rails to try to appeal to a supposed standard. They also struggle to keep up with producing proper entertainment now. Hollywood even struggles with this. Bigger productions simply can't keep up with trends now, they're too slow and it takes too way too long to produce something. That's why there is so much rehash. It's also why all their content has moved towards cultural commentary on the loud side because 1), mainly, it's cheap as hell to produce. 2) It keeps up a facade of relevance. 3) It's an attempt to hold back the floodgates for as long as possible before they are forced to acknowledge the newer trends that have risen as online media has revealed them. Traditional doesn't seem to fully understand yet how quickly things will continue to change, so that's why I think they're having a harder time finding talent that suits a proper trajectory and doesn't naturally repel viewers, because it's harder to do that without it feeling creating content that feels forced... That's also another reason they rely too heavily on politics for their content, I think, because they assume because the online audience is so rabid for it, they think that's the trend that's going to keep them in relevance... they forget there's the rest of the masses that doesn't give two sh**s about X-style politics. |
