Germany: Eurovision 1959 Representatives Alice and Ellen Kessler Have Died

Alice and Ellen Kessler, who represented Germany at the Eurovision Song Contest 1959, have died at the age of 89.

Twin sisters Alice and Ellen Kessler have died today at the age of 89. The Kessler Twins were singers, dancers and actresses whose career commenced in the 1940s, going on to be household names in Germany and Italy during the 1950s and 1960s.

Having started as dancers, in 1955 they acted in film for the first time and then began to record music in 1958. It was in 1959 that the sisters were internally selected to represent Germany at the 4th edition of the Eurovision Song Contest in Cannes. They would perform “Heute Abend wollen wir tanzen geh’n” at the competition in France, placing 8th.

During the 1960s, their career would take them to Italy, where the sisters would regularly appear on RAI’s Studio Uno. This move to Italy saw the Kessler Sisters’ careers grow further, releasing multiple singles, starring in films and a variety of television series. They would return to Germany in 1986 and would continue to appear on TV in Germany and Italy.

The sisters would spend the last decades of their lives living in neighboring apartments. They died today at the age of 89, with both sisters agreeing to end their lives, a wish they made public in recent years.

The Eurovoix team would like to express our condolences to the Kessler Twins’ family and friends at this difficult time.
