He is backpeddling now that he's in office and is realizing what is involved.

NYC, NY politics live updates: Mamdani softens on ‘Freeze The Rent’ vow after tax increase threats
https://nypost.com/2026/02/18/us-new...pdates-feb-18/

Quote:
New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani proposed a massive property tax hike to fund his blockbuster $127B budget, while Gov. Kathy Hochul has ponied up $1.5B in taxpayer cash to help bail out New York City.
Quote:
Mayor Zohran Mamdani conceded Wednesday that the Big Apple does, in fact, need homeless encampment sweeps — but vowed that his administration will have "better outcomes."
Quote:
Mayor Zohran Mamdani signaled on Wednesday that another one of his key campaign promises could fall by the wayside — as he continues to threaten tax increases to stand up his massive $127 billion budget.

When pressed on his slate of new Rent Guidelines Board, Mamdani told reporters that the board was simply "independent."

“They will consider all of the evidence we are working to lower costs for property owners across the city," he told reporters at an unrelated press conference in Harlem.

He added that they will “come to an appropriate decision."

The comments are a massive tonal shift from the far-lefty lawmaker who led repeated chants of "Freeze the Rent" on the campaign trail and brushed off criticism about how the mayor can only appoint members to the board, not direct action.

Their shift comes a day after Mamdani's doomsday budget press conference, where he called on Gov. Hochul to tax the rich, or he'd raise property taxes.

Now: Mamdani says at a press conference he hopes his six new appointees to the rent guidelines board will “come to an appropriate decision”

Certainly different messaging than his “Freeze the Rent”campaign slogan
I would be furious as a Newyorker if I weren't even living in NYC that this dipshit actually expects other people in the state to financially carry his irresponsible promises. He's ridiculous.

He's doing an excellent job though of proving that full blown socialism can never actually work and is effectively writing the campaign ads for the opposition over the next decade or so.
