Default BB net feed axed due to lack of viewers

Quote:
The live Big Brother internet feed has been dropped due to lack of demand, Channel 4 has confirmed.

A 24-hour stream was not available on the official show's website for the first time for Big Brother Celebrity Hijack. The broadcaster added more highlight video clips instead.

Channel 4 said the clips had been a success while audiences for the internet feed were too small to justify it continuing.

"The feed was dropped during Hijack when we upgraded the website," said a spokeswoman. "We moved the focus more onto video clips... [which were] vastly more popular than the streaming."

Some Digital Spy forum members have reacted angrily to the absence of the internet feed. "I'm an avid BB watcher and have watched since the show first started and am really disappointed with the live feed this year," said Cah. "I think you need 24/7 coverage to get the full picture of what's really happening instead of the sometimes biased editing they decide to show you."

The amount of scheduled live coverage on E4 has also been reduced this year. The spokeswoman said 4Music would remain in its morning slot during Big Brother 9.

Channel 4 said a live feed is still available via E4's red button interactive service to Virgin Media subscribers and those using Sky equipment. It will again be unavailable on Freeview.

However, the stream may be broadcast free-to-air by satellite for the first time this year, enabling users of Freesat and traditional FTA receivers to watch.

Channel 4 has not confirmed plans for a FTA stream but DS forum members have identified possible test transmissions. The broadcaster's other channels were made available on FTA for the launch of subscription-free satellite service Freesat.
