If my memory serves there has only been two Harry Potter films released in Summer (POA and OOTP). If I remember right POA had the lowest gross of any HP film and OOTP did well. It's a lot riskier in Summer since there's more competition.

It would have made more sense releasing it in November as it wouldn't have any of competition for a few weeks until Quantum of Solace came out. I'll be surprised if HBP does as well as it's predecessors as the mystique and hype about the series has kind of ended since DH came out. HBP will do well but not as well as the other films when Pottermania was in full swing.
