TERRIFIED WAGS Carly Zucker and Nicola McLean sobbed their way into the jungle yesterday.

The I'm A Celebrity stunners broke down after being asked to walk on water using bizarre yellow canoes.

The pair - along with fellow campers Robert Kilroy-Silk and Esther Rantzen - had to cross a large lake on the floating feet which looked like Billy Connolly's famous banana boots.

But even before the first task was over Nicola was moaning and Carly was crying as ex-politician Kilroy landed in the water.

Nicola said: "This looks like hard work to me. I don't want to do that. I don't exercise and I can't promise I won't fall in."

Carly - girlfriend of England star Joe Cole - and model Nicola eventually gritted their teeth and completed the crossing, while Esther used Kilroy's hat as a paddle.

Nicola, 27, is the nearest thing to a Scot in the jungle as her parents were born and bred here.

Her mum Margaret, 49, grew up in Port Glasgow, Inverclyde, while her dad Michael, 54, is from Keith, Banffshire. She still has family in Greenock and Edinburgh.

Margaret said: "Nicola will be chuffed if the people of Scotland back her. Nicola used to visit every school holiday."

Margaret, a nanny, admits she is very proud of Nicola, who has a two-year-old son with her footballer fiance, Peterborough's Tom Williams.

She said: "She's really excited to be going into the jungle. Nicola has already shown she is no pussycat after arguing over her £7500 fee after learning fellow celeb Dani Behr was being paid four times as much."

Back in the jungle, former Blue star Simon Webbe faced EastEnder Joe Swash in the series' first challenge, Trauma Tank.

It would decide which of the two groups of celebrities would stay in the luxury "home" camp and who would be sent to the hellish "away" area.

Some of the celebs - Dani Behr, George Takei, Martina Navratilova and Brian Paddick - have already endured a nightmare by having to get to camp by parachute jump.
The Home and Away teams will battle it out in daily Bushtucker Trials, where only the winning group will win food for the night. While the Home camp will dine on traditional British dinners such as sausage and mash, the Away camp will be served bushtucker grub including kangaroo meat.

As how insider said: "The producers are hoping for great things from Carly and Nicola, which is why they've been paired up.

"They decided to spring a surprise at the start with an early task and the stakes were pretty high because the contrast between the two camps is dramatic.

"Nobody wants to be in the Away camp, which is why the stress levels are so high."

Joe - who played Mickey Miller in EastEnders - has already had other campers in stitches with a couple of Jade Goody-style gaffes. The former Big Brother star shot to fame for asking questions such as "Rio de Janeiro, ain't that a person?" and "Is East Angular abroad?"

Joe told his fellow celebrities he had three stops en route to Australia - from London to Kuala Lumpur and Sydney. He was quickly told that was really only two.

When Martina told him she was from the Czech Republic, he asked, "Is that near Prague?" before discovering it is the capital.

The eighth series of the show - hosted by Ant and Dec - starts tonight at 9pm on ITV1.
